Tacho checks on hard shoulder

If there wasn’t any incidents involving police cars and coppers being run over, where would that leave the TV reality shows, they would have to make stories up and use actors to pretend to get run over instead.

On the other hand it may have been a Portugese lorry driver who hasn’t slept since leaving Vilar Formoso :unamused:

kids from Redditch under M40 J15
i never drive on inside lane passed stuff on hard shoulder

a hgv can not be stopped for a tacho check. it must be stopped in order to check the vehicle condition before a tachograph can be checked.

so tell the copper to check the off side wheel nuts.

You may of been pulled beacause your company has had run ins with vosa in the past, and are running a red light with them,

Have the Portugese learned how to drive now? One hit from Vilar Formoso, most of them are in the ditch before Salamanca

It’s all about the money now. They know they can raise revenue for stopping truckers and that’s more money in the coffers for them and a feather in the cap for the copper making the money. Had a driver stopped the other week and he was fined £120 for no paper in the tacho even though there was a roll in one of the lockers if the driver had bothered to have a look round the cab. They had a good reason to stop him though. Stopping trucks on the hard shoulder for a routine tacho check is highly dangerous in my opinion!

Spotted this happening yesterday - M90 J3 northbound (just north of Edinburgh) - police sat on hardshoulder at the bottom of the onslip watching vehicles approaching on main carriageway. Very light traffic, hardly anyone on the road. As soon as a truck passed, on went the blue lights, vehicle got pulled. And there was a motorway service area just a couple of miles away…

JISL to ESL:
Is it really sensible to pull a wagon onto the hard shoulder for a tacho check? It’s just so fraught with unnecessary danger.

Imagine the uproar if a car or another wagon ran into the back?

Surely the hard shoulder is for emergency use only?

I’d be very tempted to tell plod firmly I’m willing to follow him/her to the next exit or services, otherwise clear off out of my way, you stupid fellow. Seriously!

Exactly!
The hard shoulder is the most dangerous place on any motorway and and is for emergency use onlyif I got pulled on the hard shoulder I’d be tempted to mention the fact,as I hardly think a routine tacho check could be classed as an emergency worth risking your life for,or anyone elses!

when he got into the cab he said he only pulled me over for the simple reason it was quiet and not much traffic about, he didnt check my licence/I.D, check the vehicle for defects (there werent any though as i showed him my daily defect sheet) all he asked was were the “plate” was and i showed him and once he had checked my milages etc he went on his merry way after telling me to build my speed up before re-joining the motorway, to his credit though he did say “i’m sure i dont have to tell you but…” and at the end he said “its normally the car drivers we have to tell that, thanks for your time good bye” and they were gone leaving me to do manual enteries on the hard shoulder

he was a nice guy, think he was an old skool traffic cop possibly and ex-driver i didnt ask him.

far as i am aware we are green as boss showed us our current vosa score on the OCRS system with mechanical and tacho sections. :grimacing: :grimacing:

So will my check go onto our OCRS score then?

What does he do with the data and other peoples data on that downloader as he said he can hold 200 cards on it before downloading, does it get passed to vosa??

He downloads 200 drivers cards and then they trawl through it to see how much wonga they can make to go towards repaying the national debt and getting house points on their file.

I waxs pulled on the M4 about 8years ago, about a mile from Cardiff services where I was coming off to go to Barry.Load was molten maleic anhydride from Italy, weather was drizzle and misty,09.30 Saturday morning in April.I had had my break at Leigh Delamere so no problems there.
" What’s the problem, officer"He looked about 16years old but was fullof importance.
“Routine ADR check”
Let’s drive upto Services where it’s safe"
“You are safe here”----has a chat with his colleague.
“We thought your tank was leaking when you passed us”
“You were on the other carriageway when I passed you”
Gave him tachos and got into his car.He got out his big book and checked the tachos;after 5 minutes he said"I’m reporting you to the ministry, you are supposed to put your tachos in at midnight every day,you put yours in every morning, you are in trouble, and you are driving for 4hrs 25mins in France before having a break you are nearly committing an offence"
The driver by now was almost weeing himself, what a tale to tell his mates.A quick equipment check, all the time traffic whizzing past in the inside lane,he was invincible.
“Off you go driver, you will be reported to the Ministry”
His driver’s shoulders were shaking with suppressed laughter by now.
Back in the yard told my boss–Tony Rosser --for any of you Cardiff/Ely boys and he takes NO prisoners!!Straight in his car to Traffic HQ and put in a formal complaint, the young copper was taken off traffic for "retraining"we found out later.

do you still work for BRT (samat) now phil?
went to school with tony’s daughter rita, nice family, did my container lifter/handling course in their place next to Rank’s mill

No,took early redundancy 6 years ago and promptly caught a neurological illness and lost use of legs.Tony was a cracking boss,if you had a bollocking it was over and finished straight away.We called him Captain Chaos but could just ignore him and he would annoy another driver!!His wife was great, very long suffering. If they were going to Germany to visit relatives you could guarantee he would have spares in the boot to do a repair on the way,a turbo, brake chamber, clutch assembly.
