Supermarket Driving

it varies between companies. morrisons is just driving work and you are tipped by the shop staff, asda is all loading bays which are self tip with assistance from the shop, tesco/iceland/co op can be loading bays or tail lift deliveries which are self tip with assistance (usually). i am back on retail deliveries after my assessment today and although i have been spoiled with top of the range trucks and 1 or 2 hit jobs, it will be good to go back to working for a living. i wont touch co op (high risk), asda (8 hours max), morrisons (day cabs) or sainsburys (too far and too much BS) but i have wound up back at my favourite retailer (working for, not shopping at) as a replacement for all the cushy jobs i have had recently. the biggest downside is probably having to deal with shoppers thinking a loading bay is for loading their shopping so they can park there while they go and buy it. i definately prefer industrial estates to town centres but thats life. every job has its pros and cons

Co ops not so bad scanny. I normaly do a sunday or two a month at the co op, its a breeze, made easy by the 15ft trailors. Typicaly a 11hr shift with maybe 5 shops, nice work just take my time.

No where to get your head down for a kip in those yellow Morrison`s day cabs, sleep on the seat then.

That’s what I do; I had that stupid box taken out between the seats and I lay across the cab. That reminds me, got to clean those footprints before another driver sees it and has a heart attack

some of the shops are a right pita to get into though. i only did coop once on a trunk. p cab low roof scanny…and a 16ft 2 decker. took me bang on 4.5 hours from bellshill to inverness because it was that ■■■■ slow. 20mph on the motorway. tesco was a breeze in comparison and better paid/not such idiots.

i got moaned at from co op because the truck had no trailer plate…sorry but thats no my fault…twunts

Best paid and best conditions in trucking cant believe people slate it.

Its a shame here in scotchland neither morrisons or sainsburys has recruited in over 3 years despite sainsburys opening lots of new shops. Just about every driver i speak claims to have sent sainburys a cv at sometime and who can blame them. £13ph days £15ph nights and overtime, sainburys is the best. Stobbie drivers woud rather work for much less? wtf    Dessy, do you drive for money or as a hobbie?

I think all these drivers on this thread woud go on the books with sainsbury if they had the chance. Afterall best you can hope for on general haulage is max £9.50 with many earning much less Drivers bull coming through here i think.

I missed my chance some years back when tesco opened new rdc at livi was offered fulltime but turned it down cos had landed another job where i was allowed to take my dog. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well iv spent a year of my life at tesco and another year at sainsbury so i know what im talking about. Not nice being an agency bod with fulltime guys earning much more. A two tier workforce? Same as cant be nice being a stobbie driver and knowing everytime you pass a sainsbury wagon the drivers earning £5ph more than you. :open_mouth:

Yes but what your missing is life isn’t all about how much money you earn. Well it maybe for you but not for all of us. I’d much rather be very happy in the job I’m in now than earning lots more working for a supermarket but hating my job. Yes money is nice but the old cliche is true, money doesn’t buy happiness. When I was on agency some of the highest earning employed drivers I’ve ever met were on various supermarkets, they were often also a bunch of moaning whining miserable old sods.

So each to there own old chap. I did enjoy supermarket work, was on agency for 3 years, but right now I’m happy where I am.

Come a time when I want to stop tramping the first place I’ll be going is Gist in Avonmouth to ask for a job, that M&S work was always my favourite.

the last job i did there was a few months ago. that wasnt too bad as it was a couple of trunks from harthill to ■■■■■■■■■■■ then a delivery to helensburgh. the shift before that was an inverness trunk in a 53 plate scannie with an old dog of a trailer. VOSA checkpoint at stirling was open and pulling all HGVs in so i came off so the copper on the bridge wouldnt chase me then i nipped through stirling and back on the M9. they can stick their checkpoint

I did another shift Friday night for Tesco’s, Some of there drivers really take the pi$$, I was heading back after a shop delivery on the M1, bearing in mind the truck is limited to 50mph, not suprisingly I didn’t overtake much…until I get to past jcn 30. I started to catch this truck up quite quickly, guess what a Tesco driver doing 40mph(ish) I went past him reasonably quickly at 50mph(educated guess at his speed)!!! If I was in charge I’d sack him cause not only is he taking the Urine I dont think thats safe.

Fileep:
…the top paid driver did £54k last year!

Yep that’ll be the boss and he drives a Jag

That’ll never happen

I completely agree with you though - money ain’t everything! I too would rather do a job that I love and that suits me.
