Very interesting thread. I love the pictures of the chimneys bellowing out whatever it is that they’re bellowing out. I often come down the A143 from Eye, towards Bury and the sugar factory at about 2am. You can see those chimneys bellowing out from miles away, even in the dark, and smell the beet in the air.
As for the Tanningtons Scania, I love it, and their ERF. The company I work for still run about 6 of these ERF’s, some R, and some S reg, always a novelty to drive.
Thanks for the pictures, and what sharp radiant quality too. Almost makes me wish I worked on days!
Sorry I have no pictures to add, but wanted to comment on this thread.

its best keeping them as a novelty to drive, they are well past their prime, the scania really struggles with an empty trailer let alone one with beet in!

Nothing more sinister than steam, but it does smell strong!!
Well I haven’t been working today and it’s been such stunning weather that I have been around and about taking a few more pics. Hope you enjoy.
First, a few pics of the beet factory taken from Great Barton, looking down from the north.

This is one of my favourites, as you approach the main entrance from the Thetford road…

Another one of the loading process, with a load being tipped on a beet pad from a tractor:

and the loading shovel -

…and the loading…

and another one of a loaded bulker near Woolpit:

This really is a top thread chorcheela, very interesting, cos I’ve never done the beet job
Thanks.
…and finally a rather arty one I took from the Sudbury Road coming into Bury. This shows the factory and the famous plume of steam from about 4 miles away, about 10am this morning when the temperature was still below freezing, hence the mist, but the cloud of steam was amazing, rising straight up in the air…

…harvesting in action again…

…and another distant view, this time from near Ingham…

Great topic, and well done Chorcheela!
I never have done beet, but did do loads of sugar stone from derbys down to Kiddeminster British Sugar, do you ever come across sugar stone nowadays?

See this thread started last year by Euromat, I think it mentions the sugar stone!

couple of shots of the factory from early the other morning…

im still working on the other pics, they appear to be trapped on a disc, i cant get them off it
Chris,
The company still does the milk as well, in fact I see one of their ERF’s pulling a tanker most weeks from the nearby dairy farm! The trucks pulling the milk are white whereas the bulkers are dark red.
