Talking to a driver today in the yard. He is on his last chance because of speeding and the points.

He got nicked twice in the UK speeding and since then he has been caught twice in roadworks in Southern France. Tjhe French are adamant that he will receive points on his licence and have already reported him to the ministry!

His excuse. “I wanted to be home”

He won’t recieve points on his licence for the speeding in France, What could happen is that the total points for his offences in France will be kept on record, in France, and if he commits other offences there, and reaches enough to be banned, he will be banned from driving in France for a period

Sounds like he is doing the wrong job then.  We have an OD where I work who has started worrying, in a big way, about when he will get home, when someone reaches the “I want to be home before I’ve left” stage" it’s time for them to look for a new job methinks.

Jammy, what a completely slanted question. I voted no, if we think it’s OK to break the law then we might as well have complete anarchy.

Of course it’s not OK for trucks to speed, any more than it’s OK for car drivers to speed.

Far from contradicting myself there are 2 issues here. My opinion of the 40mph limit is well-known, so if I break the speed limit then I’m breaking the law, it’s my choice.

What I don’t like is the “black and white” assumption that if you feel the law is wrong then you are condoning speeding. I don’t, I just feel that the 40mph limit, is wrong, outdated, dangerous and should be reviewed. As I said on my earlier post, I’ve taken part in the DfT’s discussion on speed limits.

Why I believe in an increased limit (50) for trucks on s/c ways is that over the past few decades limits have come down while vehicles have got safer. It’s just that no-one in government has yet worked this out. These days they build family cars capable of 120mph, yet we still have the ridiculous 70mph limit on motorways.

However Jammy, if you skew the question to suit your own argument then you’ll probably get the result you want, is it not just coincidence that the results of this poll are almost a complete opposite of the poll on scrapping the 40mph limit? It’s worth a thought.

The two questions are totally different and I don’t think Jammy’s question is skewed, it’s a straight forward Yes or No answer. How else would you have worded it?

Many of the people who voted on the changing the 40 mph limit thread voted Yes but also said as long as it was 40 they would stick to that which means they would likely have voted No on this poll.

Rather than contradict each other I would say each poll confirms the result of the other.
