Our 7.5 tonner is a 54 plate and thats had its speed limiter set to 50 mph ,thats really annoying on the motorway, glad I’m not driving that anymore
as far as i know the new rules come in on the 1st of jan, but i believe all new 7.5tonners bought now have to have 56mph limters on them, as do all vehicles over 3.5t GVW,I was also lead to believe, from vosa, that all vehicles over 3.5t GVW were banned from the fast lane after the first of jan. Just like there bigger brothers
Drove my mates jumped up sprinter the other day (its a twin rear wheel) and 56mph is deppressingly slow,
However he reckons he now gets great fuel economy out of it.

The PROPOSAL is to have all vehicles over 3.5 tonne & buses/coaches, wether fitted with a limiter or not, restricted to the same 56mph & rules as LGVs BUT it has not been passed in legislation YET.Rog, are you sure about that? I read somewhere it would be implemented on 1st January 2008, not just new vehicles but all vehicles over 3.5t .
My info is from VOSA and the DfT via my MP
Not enough time to retrofit all vehicles with limiters so PROPOSAL is to impliment new law which has not yet been passed in parliament
I think you’re wrong about that. There is already legislation in place that says passenger carrying vehicles with over 8 seats in addition to the driver must have a limiter which is set at 100 kph (62 mph) not 90 kph (56 mph). I havent heard of your proposal anywhere on the internet. 100 kph has been the limit for large passenger vehicles for sometime now.
It says ERF not RAF:
I think that from Jan all new vans (sprinters, transits etc) have to be fitted with a speed limiter. So we’ll make even more car drivers annoyed as it seems everything bigger than a Smart Car will be now limited to 56 and obviously banned from the outside lane.
Why is it that a little van is limited yet a fully loaded coach full of kids can still fly around ? (sort of undermines the safety arguments for implementation in the first place ) !!!
We do not fly around. We can run at 100 kph (62 mph). Coaches and buses have priority over goods vehicles in a lot of cases. Thats why we have bus lanes etc.
Coaches are now limited to the 1st and 2nd lane leaving the way clear for 7.5 tonners to kill themselves in the 3rd lane
this may help

According to the revised edition of the vosa handbook (2007) 7.5 tonners pre 2001 (LEZ) Y Reg - W Reg etc dont need limiters. Late 51 plates and definatley 52 plates do!
Anything euro 2 and above. But anything under euro 2 can’t enter the LEZ without paying £250 a day (I think).
Our Atego is an euro 2 and passed for LEZ.
wonder if they’ll fit them to bmw’s aswell…

Engines can be converted i think using an additive (adblue?) to pass the emissions tests
Some Euro 1 and 2 engines can pass for LEZ.
mmmm, so when im loaded and going down windy hill on the m62 and trying to keep below 60mph… why do coaches full of kids stuck to the back window, or full of grannies with blue rinses pass me at a rate of knots?

Noone likes being passed by a coach with kids making v signs out the back window. I wish coaches didn’t have back windows sometimes. I’m assuming you’re on the brakes keeping to the highway code speed limit for hgv’s over 7.5 tons on motorways of 60 mph. I am sure the highway code for buses and coaches under 12 metres in length on motorways is 70 mph.
Most of the buses where I work are fitted with a limiter set at 100kph but many are too knackered to reach that speed. I’m told that the 42 new Volvo / Gemini d/deckers just been delivered to Bristol will also do 100kph, but the three 56 plate ones we have in our depot are limited to 50mph. (or have been screwed down by Maintenance Dept to keep fuel consumption down, which I expect will happen to any new ones which come our way).
Think there will be a massive rush after xmass to get 7.5 tonner restricted.
Royal mail ones, the ones in Scotland are limited to 56mph well most of them. The ones on the M6 between Preston and Carlisle are still generally not limited.
Would really do my nut in driving a limited 7.5tonner, used to occasionally do trunks in them when class 1 work quiet. Rattly things and small. Only benifit and thing that maybe it bareable was the fact you could do 70mph. Stuck at 56mph i wouldnt go near one with a bargepoll.
Same with a long wheel based transit which will now need to be limited, that would burst my head.
I think its time UK government told the EU where to go and not force speed limiters on vans and allow HGV’s to do the legal 60mph.
Euros are a bunch of fat beurocrats with little grip on reality, i can’t understand why long wheel transit vans need to be limited to 56mph.

Haven’t heard of that.Only way I know of getting a better Euro spec is putting a particulate filter on.Dinex are quoting £3500* and upwards for an FH12 380:Eminox wanted £5k+** ,(although that would take it to Euro 4,and you get a certificate which counts for Stockholm/MAUT etc).
*470 Eurostar,my mates having it done shortly.
**Telephone quote for my Euro 2 FH12,subject to them surveying the engine first.
There are other filters about though, maybe someone can enlighten us?

I’m yet to see a restricted 7.5 tonner. I’ve never seen one. I’m starting to wonder if it is all a big myth.
Ah a joy to behold. They normally sit along side you with their left indicator on wanting to come off the motorway. Their perception, and general roadcraft skills is a joy to behold. You’ll know one when you meet it !!

If they are longer than 14 meters

EU are idiots. Fitting this universal 90kph speed limiter on 7.5t and transit style vans is one of the most dangerous things you could ever wish to do. All it does is disable the driver from having full control of their vehicle. This will cause un-necessary frustration and animosity between small and large goods vehicle drivers, DRAMATICALLY increase lethal tailgating, and make life for goods vehicles drivers now even more difficult. Who exactly is benefiting from this? As far as I can see it certainly isn’t the motorist’s safety anyway.
Screw the clueless EU.

You cannot just convert an engine by adding an additive.
All operators of 7.5 tonners should be forced to run Volvo FL4, that way you would not need limiters
