Dave the Renegade:
Hi Andrew,
Did Illtyd Thomas do loads out of Alcan Swansea to Shepton Mallett,as I’m sure they were the firm my mate drove for.
Cheers Dave.
hi dave,
yes they did do that work.they were a big firm, you would see them on the welsh section of the m4 24/7. dai mentioned you’r mate this afternoon to me,he remembers him well.dai has registered for trucknet, keep an eye out for username daibootsy.you can discuss it with him then.thanks dave.
regards andrew
Thanks Andrew,we grew up together as kids, worked on lorries together and both had accidents. Look forward to having a chat with your mate Dai.
Cheers Dave.
Great pics of Illtyd Thomas.I live 2kms from their old “operating centre”!!The old farm on Swansea Road.It was odd how they folded with all the work they had. When that happened the only guy who knew where ALL the outbased trailers were was Dai Newman–sadly long departed. You could always tell you were in South Wales, evey morning at 5am every estate had clouds of blue smoke hanging over it as Illtyd’s units were firing up.
I remember running from Velindre to tip behind Trostre.Illtyd’s magnet crane, driven by Alan Pentland ,was loading scrap into railway trucks. Inside the crane cab was a spiders web of electrical cable, thick thin red green yellow blue!!!Any time it broke down in came the fitter and added new wiring. No capital investment or H&S then(1980’s)
hi welshphil,
i can imagine the state of that .if you look at the fleet during the 80’s they were well worked to say the least.an iconic welsh haulier though.
dai also tells me that this cab is still there, though it’s covered by overgrown bushes and trees and can’t be seen, sad to think that a once thriving concern that operated vehicles all over the uk ended this way.thanks again for the disc dai, that’s what this thread needs is more people like you who contribute photographs like these.more coming tomorrow.
regards andrew
Almost certainly not a Welsh truck originally but one that looks like its spent a lot of time in its resting place near Barry dock.
Can anyone shed some light on how this old Scania came to be rotting away in an overgrown yard?
Good on you Andrew for posting those cracking pics, and your mate Dai,a real good insight into a firm which I didn’t know much about, didn’t realise they were as big.
Cheers Dave.
Andrew, thanks for taking the time to post Dai.s pics. Those B series were certainly worked hard and a regular site on the heads of the valley’s road.
I can not remember seeing the E series, but they looked the business in that light blue and red livery. I was not a fan of those Ivecos, does anyone know how they performed?
Regards Paul
I’ll tell you what Andrew Iv’e meant to compliment you ,but never got round to it for dealing with all this Carryfast B******s , but from what I can see you run a very tidy workshop/paint booth well done !! Dennis.
Hi everyone, great photos,NUMBUM,ANDREW AND DAIBOOTSY,Like those old illtyd thomas ERF E series just out of the paintshop, many thanks to you ANDREW and the effort you are making with this thread, look forward to seeing more
