Hi all,
Before the current U.K. pandemic ever happened! My sixth classic truck project was delivered.A 1995 Renault Ae 520 Magnum.Powered by a 16 litre 520hp MACK V8, TBV 16 speed gearshift,Telma retarder and air slider. An iconic classic truck in my heavily bias opinion.
Hi Andrew. The Magnum looks to be in decent shape. No doubt you will have it looking better than new, once you have a chance to work on it. A surprising choice but as you said an iconic truck.
Hopefully Iâll get to see the finished product.

Hi all. Andrew if your A series was like ours it was thirsty for diesel and a pig to start when cold. I canât remember the GVW it was plated for, somewhere in between 3500 kgs and 7500kgs I think. I only did a few trips in it, sold it off and ran an ex Wales Gasboard Leyland Terrier. The Terrier was a good motor.Paul
Only 2 things wrong with those York engines Paul, hard to start and when they started they was useless!
Hi Pete, you are right there this particular one was troublesome before we bought it. It was part of the deal when we bought HY-MACs own account fleet which included two tractor units with 33 and 40ft trailers. Both units were day cabs, an F86 and F88.
The A series had a low mileage and was as new due to no one wanting to drive it as it had a habit of breaking down, usually fuel issues. It was to go to Rhymney Transportâs workshop to see if they could fix issue the dealer couldnât cure, before we put it on the road. Rhymney Transport ran Transit minibuses with the 4 cylinder York, so we were hopeful they could get it running properly. As it happened the A series went up the road prior to its visit and broke down. It was recovered and promptly sold to the recovery company who wanted such a vehicle for their own fleet.
The Volvoâs worked hard for many years after, unfortunately I was to young to drive them.

Morning Andrew / I drove one albeit a four wheel unit for Rob Williams ( Porthcawl ) some years ago probably the most comfortable motorway truck I ever drove . Cheers Ian .

That Magnum looks like its been well looked after Andrew. The dash look immaculate bearing in mind its age.
Do you still have the Mercedes ?
Heres a couple of Fordâs that used to dwarf everything back in the 70âs.

Morning John,
Thank you for confirming the location, I recognise the boating lake in the background and before Runtec dropped all their scrap trailers there I had many a night out parked on that spot.
All the above picâs are Andrewâs early postings on TN and have the photobucket problem that Bewick encountered, had a play around and got it removed, pity it donât work on all the picâs, you have to do them one at a time! Cheerâs Pete

Hi Smallcoal,
Thanks for that, great 35 minutes of nostalgia there.Ive never seen that video before,Being a similar age to yourself,I canât really remember the job running.Horse and cart by the main weighbridge! Looks like an Albion on our left, with possibly a Jones Motors wing on the cab door? The AEC artic as youâve all guessed may have been Blue Line?
If anyone is curious? Look at the last screenshot.Type that into google videos.

Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis,
Thanks for the reply. Your comment did make me smile mate.Three images here, firstly me in October 1982,in my first car,at Groom & Llewellyn on North Road Bridgend Industrial Estate and more recently from just up the road Smiths Heavy Haulage. Finally an Allied Steel and Wire Steyr, owned by Graham Maunderâ â ?
I took some pics from that film where was this bridge it ran from south Cornelly quarry to the harbour along the Morva beach rd,also brs at east end entrance
Morning Coop,
Re: the BFI film on the building of the deep water harbour at Port Talbot the shots taken near the weighbridge brought back lots of memories. That would have been around the time I started driving a Thorneycroft four wheeler in there for Dai Lovelock subbing through D David & Sons later Blue Line.
The AEC is BXS 378 which iirc was ex Allisonâs Dundee but carries a Paisley registration and was an eight wheeler originally.
The red and green four wheeler iâme fairly certain is an Austin operated by Pantdu Haulage on the same sort of
work that I did. Greenings from Killay had an Albion Chieftain on the same sort of work.
As you say the film was very interesting.
Regards Allan
Hi dennis,I came across that film, there are other films on different steelworks and industry some are silent and some are talking ,the horse and cart looks like a milkman on it with his white coat
,and to think all that rock and stone came from south Cornelly

Hi Allan,
I also really enjoyed the film.Im guessing they left the TARMAC South Cornelly quarry? Or the one Sammy owns now? Gaens quarry, with rock from either or both? They somehow built a haul road across the fields to where Newpark Farm and Sker farm meet,as Iâm told there were traffic lights there and the dump trucks followed the ancient track down to Sker farm. From there theyâd have turned right and followed the coast along the very wide haul road they built for that job.The route from Sker house I know well,as I used to go down there on my motor cross bike,30 plus years ago.Though I know nothing of how many quarries or what route they actually took from Quarry to Sker Farm entrance.
I wondered if youâd recall that AECâŚ
Regards Andrew.
