Hi daibootsy, study your photos of Hoover AECs general opinion seems to suggest that the fleet was made up of AEC Mandators, I would agree with that is correct, however looking through the December 1961 edition of the AEC Gazette a magazine I have had in my possession since publication I find the attached photograph and caption regarding tractor unit 3213 MT I would have thought back then that the AEC publishing caption writers would have got their facts correct before printing. Some of you gents down in South Wales must know for sure. ?
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Hiya,
The BRS, only used the lighter tractors for single axle trailers the Mandators only
ever pulled tandems and ran at max weight permissible at the time, if Hoover
were using Mandators for those lightweight trailers it seems like a sledgehammer
being used to crack a walnut.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hi all,
20 year ago there was an ex Hoover Mercury tractor unit in llandow commercials yard.heres a couple more from Barry, the tanker years.

Hi All

The Mecurys and those single axle trailers were used for direct deliveries of washing machines to retailers. The distribution system was changed and the direct delivery system was completely phased out in 1968. Quite a few drivers were made redundant then.

The Mandators were used to move bulk product from the factories to distribution depots around the country. They also were used on trunking work to Scotland, taking washing machines to the Airdrie depot and returning with the electric motors made in the Camburslang factory.
We also had twin deck single axle trailers for direct deliveries to cutomers like Currys. Usually just 1 drop to a warehouse, although on the odd occasion I did go out on mulidrop.
When I started in 1973 we also used flats to take export machines direct to docks but this work declined due to containerisation.

I agree with you “H” they would be Mercury’s and they would be well on top of their job pulling one of those “showboat” trailers with a few washing machines in the back. Cheers Dennis.

Heard the afternoon John t Evans have got the receivers in one of their drivers told our driver in Cardiff ,they shutting up shop

Hi diabootsy, thanks for posting photo of the Albion, what I really need confirmation of, is the unit in the photo I posted a Mandator or a Mercury despite what the caption reads ? a Mandator I think.
Cheers Leyland 600

Regarding the Albion 4 wheeler. Hoover ran a mixed fleet in the direct delivery era. There were some Commer units as well. There are photos on a web site. I will see if I can find a link.

Best regards

Alyn
