South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Here is a clearer picture showing the cab, its last incarnation was the “super G cab” with that horrible apricot coloured plastic trim plus the uncomfortable drivers seat that sloped towards the steering column, if I never got back ache handballing ten ton off the back of it, I sure got it driving it!! Yes, Steve Hayes, nice guy always had time to help him out when he came into the garage. Those SA’s with twin ‘steer’ were useless for European work, when loaded & if conditions were wet or snow you couldn’t dump the air in the second axle to try and get grip, always remember Ward Jones moaning he couldn’t get out of Dover docks due to no grip on the drive axle and couldn’t dump the second axle to put more weight on the drive, hence they were replaced and very popular with the drivers for F10’s! (And us fitters!)

Thanks simon,
I recall those 6x2 401’s as being unpopular.you would have done a bit on these rockwool motors,i dare say? I will always remember you and I witnessing a j.r. Gardner engine, run backwards!must be 30 plus years ago now.have a great Christmas and new year mate.

Very well, JR senior gave me the pleasure of overtime on a Saturday morning’s to take a tin of red paint and everything else that went with it and touch up and if needed repaint the rims on every truck lined up on JR’s roundabout, it was a pleasure… Never mind the money was gratefully received!

Steve Hayes, I think I worked with his brother Mark Hayes at GJ Thompson in Telford, Steve was working at GJ Simmons then merry Xmas all
