Thank you for these great photos of Gwynne Bowens S 20 Fodens I used to load back from them in the 60s with Tin Plate either from their depot storage facility or Bryn Gwyn works, Great old days, Regards Larry.

Hi all, Andrew great photos as always. Please thank Graham for calling you, that’s a nice set up he is driving there.

Nice paint job on the Scania, reminds me of traveling with my grandfathers sheep to Abergavenney market or horses to St Mellons on tack for the winter months.
My cousin and I would ride in the extension of the box over the cab along with bales of hay or straw keeping an eye on the precious load.
As we got older we listened to the note of the 381 Bedford engine in the TK of Rowland James of Tredegar as we went up and down the black rock.
Rowly and Graham will remember this, but before the by-pass from Caerphilly to the A470 was constructed you had to go over Thorn Hill to get to Cardiff. On one trip fully loaded to St Mellons I remember our driver who name escapes me right now, stopping at the bottom of the hill and putting that Turner box into second gear and slowly heading up the hill. He came down the other side just as slow.
Listening to that motor and making every gear change for the driver indicated we were not going to be farmers.

My cousin Nigel went on to get an apprenticeship with Hills of Tredegar, a well respected coach company at that time working on Bedford and Leyland buses.
Being a few years younger I worked with him on our family’s lorries as he learned his skill as a diesel fitter. I got roped in to the family engineering business but still to today lorries or trucks are my passion and I am still fitting and driving forty years later. The difference is I now drive on the (wrong) side of the road. Right side, left hand drive!

Its never ceases to amaze me how this forum and thread brings back tremendous memories of how we got hooked on diesel.

Regards Paul.
