Blast from the past I worked for wyn ford on the remploy contract also took that sed don to Derby from the wire place in Llanelli

Hi smallcoal was that Delta Crompton cables ? John Evans as well as North did that sort of work . JE did alot to Delta at Stalybridge , regards Keith .

That was Delta-Enfield, in the Morfa, the contract was initially Barrie Williams + John Evans and somehow Wynford North wrested that away and slipped Barrie out of the back door. I hobbled for Barrie from Delta to Stalybridge, Enfield, Belfast (It was near Belfast, but the name escapes me) and a few other sites, it was great work! All trip money! Those were the days. Rumour had it that it was the best paid work in S.Wales, we didn’t grumble! I remember John Bach (moved to John Evans after), Mel from leominster and Alan Vale (Transport Manager). somewhere around here I still have a uniform jacket marked ā€œBARRIE WILLIAMS TRANSPORTā€. I can’t remember the name of his shunter in Delta, all I remember is that he was blind as a bat (He memorised the chart to pass his medicals), but a nicer man was not possible to meet! (Just remembered his name ā€œBernardā€)

Daidog, I also worked for barrie on and off for ten years,he put me through my class 1 . the Belfast drop was deltas at dunmurry,
,you had to pass through two sets of security fences to access the industrial estate at the height of the irish troubles. Trip money was great ,made loads of dosh as long as lorry kept running. John Bach passed away some years ago, and mel Beddoes from Leominster passed away last year, 10 mths after retiring (sods law), your so right about Bernard the shunter always missing trailer pins and knocking into things. I arrived at Stalybridge one day with the fly sheet on upside down." good old Bernard" got loads of photos of barrie,s lorries uk and when we went over the water, hav,nt figured out how to upload them yet Andy

Great times! Good boss despite his orientation towards the riskier side of life (Hello Barrie, if you are reading this). I liked most of the drivers, but some were telling the boss everything, he told me later that he didn’t care as long as the work was done! No-one believes me about Bernard. I bought him a pint and sat down next to him in a pub in Llanelli one evening and said hello - he looked me straight in the eyes and said ā€œWho are you?ā€ He couldn’t see me! His glasses were thicker than an Irish plank  Barrie used to go mad when Bernard drove a truck down to the yard! Barrie was famous for doing what everyone said couldn’t be done!
Bring on the 'photos, I may be in some?
Sad about John Bach and Mel, nice guys!

Andrew where did the mercs come from ? I’ve seen them on video at orgreave with British steel stickers on ,were they hired in for the strike ? I thought at this time BS were sed Atki users .

hi dan,
there were literally hundreds of hauliers and owner drivers on the convoy’s all over the uk,during 84/85.in south wales they were later numbered and in different colour groups, before all that happened i think? there were quite a few incidents on the m4.as far as i am aware,no british steel owned vehicles were on that job.
regards andrew.

Hi all. Andrew the 143 of Robert Carn’s pulling the Cardiff International trailer is the name that has been escaping me for the longest time.
Mechanic 77 posted a pic of F515 with the name no longer on the motor. That’s the last truck/tractor unit I drove in the U.K. back in September 1991. It was just two years old as the H reg came out the previous month. It was immaculate at that time with a low mileage, it spent more time parked up at Telford Trucks yard than on the road. Robert didn’t work to hard, but was good enough to let me take it up the link road for a run.
It was a flying machine. The previous day I took my old tractor G580 XAE 2535 Powerliner 2 up the same road, and couldn’t believe the difference between the two. That Scania was way superior at that time. Mind you, both trucks were way better than the Volvo/White/GMC I had here new in 94.
Recently being up and down the M5/M6 etc I saw a lot of the latest European trucks and must say they look more imposing and impressive than those here in North America.

Regards Paul

Hello Paul, its seems there is still a bit of a mystery with this as I’m sure the 143 I had a picture of and that Andrew has a photo of at work is a G reg 470, Topline, same livery though and both related to Cardiff international.
Neil.

Never mind the trailer…smart flat top

Here’s a little beauty sent to me by Douglas Thomas for me to post on the Glyn John Transport facebook. Page

hi all,
i haven’t had chance to post much lately as the heinkel search is proving to be,a bit of an adventure  .also this weekend we all met up at a hotel in swindon for the annual steelboys christmas party.over 120 of us from all over the uk had a wonderful time.i think? and my memory of last night is a little vague! over Ā£4,000 was raised for charity.for me one of the highlights of the evening that was created by the steelboys legend that is steve evans.a mutual friend of ours who attends many events with us on the uk and belgian show circuit in his immaculate 143 and living trailer had a nasty accident at a farm leaving him wheelchair bound.via steve evans and his relentless efforts, three members of the fire and rescue crew that saved our friends life at the accident scene that day, were re-united with him and his family for the first time.there really wasn’t a dry eye in the entire function room.steve mate,i know you will see this.i will never forget what you did there,a wonderful gesture.
regards andrew.
