some more golden oldies, wheale bros, fodens 1942

Bert Heywood on the left and Jimmy “The Major” Brooks on the right. Both long serving drivers with my dad from steam days. The article is from the 1942 Foden company magazine. My father always told a tale of carrying naval mines in the war. One is reputed to have become “primed” in transit … fortunately, one of these two knew how to “un-prime” it …!

Thanks for the Watkins pics chaps, those 8 leggers were man killers, but one of the regular drivers was rewarded with that F86, what happened to it?

Hi andrew and deecee, that F86 was very unreliable according to one of its drivers … several problems and Watkins vowed not to buy another !! . I belive it may have ended its days as a shunter at either the Whitehead , or GKN tremorfa …, i note that the former garage still proclaims J M Watkins Westgate garage … deecee, by any chance do you remember the Scammells Watkins ran ? … i did not see them myself … Geraint .

Hi Geraint
No Scammells while i was with Watkins during the 60,s until we were all sacked for striking about 1970.
Thanks Dave

I’am sure i saw this PBO 403G at they’re tredegar site as they had removed the 4 in line back wheels to unload a D8H and being about 12 years old at the time stayed and watched as i seen them side loaded D8’s before. They did also have another highwayman as well at the same time i think,Rich.

hi dai,
cool wynns crusader shot, looks like the albany road yard.oddly enough a load of us and our trucks are going there for most of the day a week tomorrow (20/12/14).a good christmas day out for a truck mad 13 year old autistic boy from cwm called kian badcock,he has sadly lost the sight in his left eye this year and with his other medical issues he hasn’t had the best of time recently.via Facebook a call was put out to gauge interest in a day out for him amongst the road transport community of south wales and the response has been absolutely phenomenal.around 50 plus trucks are expected and a lot of guys and their companies have put a lot of effort into creating this christmas treat.i’ll get a few pictures for us all.very well done to all those involved. your help and continual offers of support have been magnificent.
regards andrew.
