mike stubbs drove for evans transport, they were based across the road fromj&m transport.
The Guy Big J on the low loader was my handiwork , I had been up to ductiles with a coil on a 33ft tr & had a 2nd drop in worcester, the trailer had an air pot leaking & while coming down the A38 towards the M50 in the rain ( perhaps moving a mite too fast for the conditions )I rounded a bend & there was a van parked on the road touched the brakes went to change down no air & she wouldnt go into gear " oh dear " i thought this could be awkward " at that moment a woman came out of a house & put a bike in the back of the van & i’m bearing down upon it !!! whats to do & being somewhat young & by this time panicked I pulled the deadman & she jackknifed just clipping the van & tumbling the woman back into the garden (Thankfully she was not badly injured) that would have been ok but the dodge tipper coming the other way took the front off the guy & did a nosedive into a field i jumped out through the wind screen & after seeing the woman was ok looked towards the tipper now on its side in a field with aguy on top with the door open looking down , fearing the worst i ran over but the driver was ok he had a nasty gash on his head but he was looking for his flask , it taught me NEVER take a chanch with brakes no matter how important the load !!!
Silver Roadways had a yard in Penllegaer opp 3Ms, but the traffic office was at Gloucester place nr Swansea docks, one of the drivers was Vernon, who later went to work for illtyd Thomas.

That’s a blast from the past Griff Fender.
Used to see Griff Fender’s wagons through the hedge regular between Leominster and Brecon. I remember one half buried in a building next to the Rhydspence in the mid 60’s.
Cheers Dave.

That’s it Keith. They also had some FE Austins before the FFK’s. Between them and Sam Longson’s, that road was like a racetrack.
Cheers Dave.

It certainly was Dave , Sam Longson would park up for the night at Hay on Wye ,there was also Richardsons of Oldbury using that road as well as Cartwrights of Amblecote taking sand to Margham bringing steel out .
Can not forget Kendricks from Walsall and their Fodens , but possibly my favourites were Oliver Hart from Lancs , also hauling coal . And of coarse BRS Dudley and their change over at Eardisley station . happy days Dave regards Keith

Hi Keith,
I go through Hay on Wye regularly. Its hard to believe that all those wagons used to park there, a lot on changeover, also a lot of drivers from that area on for John Evans . I remember the eight wheelers lined up at Eardisley station, also Winforton transport cafe with lorries full the park with more out on the side of the road. They were happy days.
Cheers Dave.

j&m transport were based on stormy down,on an old aerodrome next to the main a48.they ran many f88’s and some f86’s on uk,international and middle east work.(sorry about the poor picture )there is on the end of this line up ,j&m’s one and only leyland buffalo.
my brother drove that Buffalo he told me it must have had a half dozen engines in the time they had it !!
Hi unclegargameld,
Intresting to read about your brother and his opinion on j&m’s disastrous buffalo.i got to agree with you 100%.in fact, though I was only young at the time, every time I was taken out in it,we always came back to stormy down on the bar.what was your brothers name please? I may remember him?
Regards andrew.
