Its quite possible they bought it new from the AEC Main dealer in Hull, Or perhaps acquired it second hand, But nevertheless it looks in good fettle, In fact they were on of my fave motors , Regards Larry.

Hi all. Andrew, PLEX Freight was Part Location Express iirc with transits painted dark red/rust and yellow.
I am fairly sure it was part of Vaughns of Bridgend. If so I remember a few heated conversations with the owner.
They rented from us at Gullivers often.

Once again great photo’s being posted.

Regards Paul.

Hi Paul,
Good to hear from you.i’d say you were right vaughan’s became part location which became plex freight,Leighton ? From porthcawl owned them.then a few years later ,plex freight were bought for a £1 by S&k in mid- late 90’s?

I think his surname was Issacs. He did seem to enjoy a good discussion and was always right!

Evening all, Andrew, that is a beautiful photograph of a beautiful outfit. If Im not mistaken that looks like a Highway Multiwheeler 28ft coiler behind the Mk 1. Nice bit of sheeting and roping.

Yes Ross were a fair outfit, I bought and sold a fair few of their old ones, but always tried to view, and do the business before Stan got me in the Cattle Market bar…for obvious reasons. Ive left Cardiff by some very circuitous and varied routes after a couple of hours in his entertaining company!

Thanks for the memories, Cheerio for now.

Technical question here, what make of drive axle is on the Ross Atki,it looks like a hub reduction to me ? Cheers Dennis.

Well spotted Bewick.

I think they finished up with Scanias Andrew. I had a 0600 drop at Monsanto Newport from Staveley Chemicals, must have been early/mid 70s and one of their night lads log booked me somewhere near Raglan. He’d run out of time, left it in a lay-by for some one else to collect.I know he’d changed trailers in Sheffield but I think he’d done a night drop somewhere else - maybe West Midlands - and got held up.

Maybe the axle was an experimental one,as IIRC Atkis were still using the Kirkstall BDR drive axle in’71,the D85 HR axle appeared on “L” reg tractors 12 months later along with the “dreaded” Group axle! Come to think of it I’ve seen Atki single drive 8 wheelers with an identical drive axle end like the Ross Garages tractor unit ! Ah! the mists of time are closing in fast nowadays !    Cheers Dennis.
