Hi oily,
Thanks for those pictures.they are known as coil liners in this wonderful  age we live in.though this was how I remember steel haulage… And always will.a sheeted coiler leaving the trailer park in the abbey :sunglasses: .

What spec of engine did that Merc have Andrew ? 1844 maybe ? Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis,
That one was a 1635,new in January 1986…she was some motor back then.one of the first 35’s in South Wales, though she always sounded different to the others that joint had,was a bombproof machine!she was sold after many years service to a log haulier in Brecon.

Next question Andrew, was that a factory colour or had Joints changed their fleet colour from green at that time ? Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis,
From 1985 c reg. onward joint started running them in whatever colour the new motors were painted at the factory, usually white.d661 mep was factory red with silver stripes when new, though was badly damaged when about 18 months old and repainted red? With grey stripes, not by me  in 1989 they finally agreed to my idea of white cab with green and red painted stripes on every road vehicle they ran.for a few years before I did that, everyone wherever any number of us went together, people would always say “why are all joint’s motors different colours”.
Regards andrew.

So thats your “claim to fame” at Joints is it Andrew! You sorted out their fleet image, sounds like the cost of painting had got too “rich” for them at that time, pity, but I think you brought them into into the modern era by what you designed, good on you mate ! Cheers Dennis.

Look at all those loaded trailers!!! You wouldn’t see that amount in a fortnight now!

Hi all,
Here’s a question,ec14 should be able to tell us.what was/ if any :question:the connection with this firm and what was later the massive firm of russel davies from the east coast.it was explained to me by my old boss at joint once many years ago.

Hi Andrew, I was told the story by a fellow Porthcawl boy on here. Glyn Davies and John Williams were friends, and after Tommy and John fell out John went to Ipswich to work for Glyn Davies and his brotherinlaw Glyn. Both Glyns were married to sisters from Bridgend.

I was in their Ipswich office back in the late 80s, and heard someone in the back office saying, not another Welsh man, don’t we have enough around here. Later that day I was told who the owners were.
Those Welsh guys employed a lot of people at one time.

Regards to all,

Paul.

John Williams, fell out with his mother, because john was marrying a very well educated coloured girl, he is still with her now. They live in Felixstow, john did work for Glyn, And glyn helped john to set up a business. Tommy is still talking to john now. Tommy ask john to come down to Brigdend and sort the business out.

that is what a proper trailer park looked liked ,that was when u could load 6 trailers in a shift ,when hot roll coil or eye to sky u could load anything up to 10 trailers no sheeting load weigh out & drop most would pay bonus of £10 a trailer after 4 trailers good old days in pt

Few more pics.

Hi all,
Had another good season opener at malvern :sunglasses: .i’ll put a few on for Paul john, though there is a thread on here, where you can see a lot more.firstly the indoor steelboys display :sunglasses: .

This event was bigger and busier than previous years.

This roadtrain was “new out”,not the best of weather to display a very well restored truck  14ltr 320 ■■■■■■■ and a 10 speed spicer :sunglasses: .

Swains corner :sunglasses:

This was another new one :sunglasses: .great to see new motors, especially one with a well known company livery and name.

One for Nigel groom  I did see you on high cross Friday evening.

Hi all,
Here are a few more of retired driver Alan evans’ pictures :sunglasses: .

I never thought of that Andrew,it just could have been that extra strong Cheddar we had on friday night mate !!But it was a great win for Wales and well deserved. I’m not a big RFU fan, more RFL if I have the choice, however,I don’t mind watching the Six nations and,of course,I support England first and The Boyos a very close second. The other four nations I’m not interested in,oh!,as long as France gets beaten by whoever they are playing eh!.That was a class shot of the wide vessel on the Joints Merc, did only a select one or two drivers handle loads of that nature at Joints ? Cheers Dennis.
