Great to see the site is going from strength to strength lads, check on here every day! But alas no new photos for me to add of south Wales lorries.

Does anybody on here remember the haulier Denzil Edwards of Cross Inn? If I recall he used to operate AEC marshals? And used to carry pit rings for the NCB and had 8 wheeler AEC tippers. any photos would be great. thanks Ian

Ian, not sure if I have the same firm in my mind, but I remember back in the mid 70s having to go to Llantrisant for MOTs if Pontypool was booked up. We would come through Beddau, and make a right turn there somewhere, up a hill and there was a garage on the left hand side that ran blue tippers.
I clipped a tree on one such visit, and cracked a mirror. Stopped in there and borrowed one for the MOT, actually took one off a motor that was being worked on.
Whats that hill around there that will drop you down into Treforest?, or am I lost.

Regards Paul.

Hello paul john.
I remember Denzil Edwards (D M Edwards) his yard was in southgate next to the Vauxhall dealers,if you came from the direction of the cross inn pub, under the 12, 6 bridge they were on the left as you went towards llantrisant, they were a dreary grey coloured fleet, they did run a few LAD cabbed albions and at one time were transporting large block stones from Graig yr Hesg quarry at pontypridd to the new deep water harbour at port talbot.

Andrew, I think Scandretts may have been an early version of Alte express, I think their yard was in Risca. Tony Transcon will know more.

Hello Andrew/Neil
I think the scania is one of the old Alcan ones from nearby rogerstone site which has now gone itself. The photo looks to be taken in Risca/Pontymister , Ochrwyth is in the back ground. The yard was on the site of the old pontymister steelworks. The area has been redeveloped over the years industrial units and access roads to the new superstore on the site of the old foundry built after the steelworks went. I spent many times as a youngster sat on a large steel framework watching Alte express transconts coming and going in the yard , they had ‘r’ and ‘s’ regs ones, The yellow and brown livery standing out , my mates and I always referred to the name scandretts for the company. The entrance was off the main road in Risca past bird plant demolition and scrap , they had two volvo’s both f88’s I think but i not sure from memory, [one may have been an 89] , and a load of AEC’s. Then over a river bridge and the yard was on the left. The straight road by the side of the yard was usually full of loaded trailers with drainage castings out of the foundry waiting delivery which Clayton & sons another local operator pulled with a variety of lorrys ergo cab aec’s and scammell crusaders.
Many thanks for stirring some old memories just regret not taking any photos.
regards

Tony
