Dave,is that Cray Reservoir on the A4067 between Pontadarwe and Sennybridge?
Great b and w photos. :sunglasses:

No Chris its the Nant Ddu reservoir that is besides the A470 between the Storey Arms and Merthyr. This pic would have been taken off the much higher Storey Arms to Hirwaun road the A4059 where you look down on that reservoir. If you remember you leave the A470 at the dam of the Beacon’s reservoir ( 1st reservoir ) for Hirwaun.
Cheers Dave.

Hi dave,
There will be a peterbilt 359 on that very stretch of road on Sunday morning :sunglasses: .i will get some pics
ReGards Andrew.

Will see you in Hereford on Sunday Andrew.

Ah well,I wasn’t too far out. I used to love that run home from Swansea on a saturday,Brecon,Leominster,Tenbury Wells,Kidderminster and onto the M5 at Quinton. :sunglasses:

You were in the right county Chris, just the other side of the hill.As you say, you look down on Cray from a similar view.Nice ride over the Beacon’s,as long as its not snowing.
Cheers Dave.

Happy birthday RIP . Always remembered never forgot .

Coming home .Tony

I’ve had to get the map out for this Dave, but I remember one saturday, just before the A40 at Sennybridge, the road was closed and I had to turn right and came out on the A470 at a place called Libanus. I followed a tipper I do remember but can’t recall the operator. It was in the mid-70s.

pete 359:
this was my baby.new in september 1989,the only?as i recall 1748 merc on steel out of south wales, and when i had the keys for that at the age of 24 years old,boy i thought i was king of the hills.480 hp may seem nothing now,but in a gatso free, speed limiter free time it was some machine!

hi chris,
if you were heading for swansea and you came through libanus, after coming up and over the beacons, the storey arms would be at the top on your left and a little further along on the other side of the road is this lay-by next to the reservoir,as dave says, the junction for hirwaun is built on the dam of this reservoir.it’s a fair pull up from the dam and if you look to your left half way up you will see the view that’s at the top of this page.
regards andrew.

I know where you mean Chris.Libanus is about 3 miles from Brecon. Not so many lorries travel the Cray route nowadays,as the A465 is dual carriageway from Hirwaun through to the M4.
Cheers Dave.

Nice shot off Kelvin looking down to see what gear he is in.

Thanks for that Andrew, and a great photo. You would have been like a dog with two tails driving that Merc at 24 years old.
As I said to Dave,I used that road past Cray just when running home on a saturday with bags of time,I far preferred it to Glyneath which was single carriageway in those days - a real drag it was.

I just wondered on the off chance if anybody remembers Port Talbot Chemicals, they were Benzole refiners and were part of a group based in Scunthorpe called - I think - Lane Brothers. You got to the place over a level crossing and I seem to recall a tanker firm in there in a yellow livery, not Barworths from Scunthorpe though, who had local drivers.I’m sure I’ve seen a photo on this thread of them but there are so many pages…

Steves Scania looking mighty fine.

hi chris,
i took this one yesterday morning northbound outside the storey arms.the old road is behind the first row of trees and fence,it was upgraded many years ago.it was a bit wet up there yesterday morning, during the winter months it can be brutal.the sas have trained up there for many years!

Hi Andrew and all you Welsh lads

Cracking thread and photo’s

I’ve just been having a rummage through all my old photo’s and came across these few which may interest you… All taken around '90 or '91.

Cardiff Transport taken on the M4 when she had a full head of steam up.

Keedwells taken at truckfest

Bute Transport taken at Winkleigh Aerodrome, when we used to be allowed in! I think I can vaguely remember them on the road but would love to hear any info about them…
