Somebody has a guardian angel

What you have to remember is we are still running 10 studs pretty much the same size now at 44ton as we were back in the days of 38 ton.
I was once told and not sure how true is was that if one nut is to come loose the other 9 will fail very soon after as they simply cant take the load at max tonnage.

have an extra two wheels now though -

120 nuts for 44t - 366kg per nut
100 nuts for 38t - 380kg per nut

back when I started in the 70s we had 80 nuts for 32ton - 400kg per nut

clearly back in the day our nuts had a tougher life,

When men were men and you could hit their nuts with a hammer and no one complained :grimacing:

Ps still get 80 nuts at 32 ton on pretty much any 8 legger, I think our lot run 80 nuts at 35 ton on artics, but might be wrong there.

The man from Goodyear tells me that it’s now a set process that after a wheel has been removed and replaced at the roadside, the tyre fitter follows the truck in his van, and they stop and retorque once they’ve covered a few miles.
Some fleets demand a second retorque.

As a former pcv fitter for a large firm beginning with ‘Fir…’ I can divulge thus…

Once tyre has been sorted by external contractor, the refitting of the wheel/s procedure is…

Clean all wheel mating faces to bare metal, inspect for any cracks/corrosion/elongation to holes.
Inspect hub faces, wheel studs, nuts, for wear, damage, cracks, thread wear, tapering, and chuck the Rick clips in the bin.

Once that, and all paper works done, as to what’s off what, going onto where, and ensuring tacho approved tyres ain’t got mixed into the equation it’s fit wheel, woe betide a pair of rears… [emoji1787]

Lightly Oil studs/ nuts, nip up with air gun to ensure seated flat to hubs, drop to the deck then torque with DESIGNATED SET WRENCH… Which ain’t been calibrated in years an gets lobbed about like a cheap ■■■■■■ [emoji36]

Then we wait 30 minutes.
Pop back, retorque.
Fit new Rick clips
Send on 30 mile Road test.
Bring in,remove clips recheck, retorque.
Refit clips
Hope the tyre fitters got the pressures right, and that the rear wheels have had valve extensions fitted, and properly…
All the associated sops, sheets…
Tidy up, wash wheels off again, and then we pray.

A single front wheel can be a 3hr turn around in a depot, no joke esp if it’s gotta be repainted, as mating faces have to stay bare metal, road tests can be a nightmare time wise, plus lack of equipment, and a culture that promotes if the wheels ain’t turning…

You’d be horrified what corners are cut, and its why I’m out as on my watch never a wheel lost, yet all around me MANY MANY went astray, whilst in service too [emoji15]

Folk would be horrified if they knew how bad hgv/pcv fitting as a job is when u work for some of these so called professional operators…
