I posted this in Winseers accident thread, accidentally by accident, i’ve now chastised meself and put it in right thread.

I’m very much obliged to The Couch’s posts here.

Just checked up the small print on both of our policies, indeed he’s spot on, commutes are to ‘‘one permanent place of work’’ only, this could easily catch many out.

I thought, like most i suppose, that a commute to work was a single commute to work wherever it might be, not so.

Many thanks The Couch.

It’s possible your Insurer may be happy to cover you for different places of work eg agency work under normal commuting cover, it’s worth checking with them. If they do agree to cover it under commuting it’s really important that you take a note of the persons name and the date/time or even better ask them to confirm in writing. If you don’t and have an accident or are stopped by the police and there’s no note on your record to that effect it can cause problems. Insurers are expected to record calls so having the name and date/time means the call can be easily tracked down. If you don’t there’s a chance the call won’t be able to be traced leaving you high and dry

Yes, i shall be phoning Adelaide and Saga on Monday, once in a blue moon i cover another depot about 30 miles away, as i’m already part way there it would make sense to just drive there straight from home instead of going to my normal depot and getting in the pool car, SWMBO and i tend to swap cars about so best if both companies are happy with this.

As you’ve rightly suggested i shall get a name/extension number and hopefully a reference number, if no joy i’ll simply carry on using the pool car for the journey and then see about class 1 business at renewal time.

Again, many thanks The Couch, you might well have saved some of us a very serious problem, i suspect most agency lads assumed the same as i, that commuting covered them but without knowing they run the risk every day.

Business use on mine cost £10.80 pa.

Most people I know who have it say its sensible.

Obviously it would be better to not have to pay to work but certainly not hundreds.

I always understood commuting to mean not driving during the working day, which you’re not - but looks like your wording is designed to exclude agency type staff with many bases.

At least if its a tenner and you get it, there shouldn’t be any problem.

I think you’ll be ok with Saga as they have a loose definition which looks to cover your situation (From their FAQs)“What do you class as commuting?
Commuting is required if you are driving yourself or another person any part of your journey to work - i.e. if you drive to the station and then take the train to work, you need to have commuting on your policy.”

I assume Adelaide will be relatively flexible if they specialise in professional drivers.

As mentioned don’t assume, give them a ring and ideally get any confirmation in writing

I have now changed my policy to business use class 1 but can you tell me because I forgot to ask.

Will it still include driving other people’s car with their consent.

Some Insurers have certain occupations which they purposely exclude driving other cars for, this often includes drivers in the transport industry.

If you had it before there’s a good chance you still have it.

The fail proof way to check is to look at the CERTIFICATE of Insurance which is a legal document which confirms what cover you have under the Road Traffic Act.

If you look near the section which confirms who is covered to drive you will normally see the wording confirming your covered (If you’re covered). If it’s on the Certificate then you’re covered

Thanks will look out when policy arrives
