Air-filters---- and no doubt Frank’s eyes will glaze over!! Anyway this is a shot taken in mid '76 when we had just taken over K.Fell & Co and this tractor was Nreg '74 and has the round filter!
I can see me waking up in a cold sweat one of these nights after dreaming about ERF air filters … not!

Hiya…ubym its ok ERF did fit a V8 detroit into a steel cab 8 legger. i think it was for Aus or N Zealand. I did some bonnet modifications as the engine was so low in the chassis. The MW cab was almost walk through. that would be in IICR 1968
John
never knew ERF did that the only thing I know about detroits I often passed tms climbing hills seemed to be struggling and they sounded awful maybe they were the smaller detroits I don`t know I personally always liked a ■■■■■■■ engine, theres an interesting page on big lorry blog if you type in the search box “whatever happened to gardner engines” it tells of an 8lxyct engine and a 6lyt which was 16 litre producing 350 bhp and on a test bed with a turbo 500 bhp, sorry to put a spanner in the works it also seems that the 8xlb is a great marine engine which I was not aware off, this debate could go on forever cheers fred m

Hiya …ubym Gardners was most famous for marine engines(and some was 2 strokes) they moved into road transport later. If you go to the steam rallys around
sandbach area theres a twostroke gardner marine engine that tours on a pochins ERF curtain sider.theres also a musium at pointon thats got many gardner
engines on show.Theres a company Bolshaws (macc/whaly bridge road) they have a IICR Alvis car with a 4 cylinder Gardner that belonged to Gardners.
Ubym… the bit about the test bed 8 cyl went alot further Bassetts of Stoke had 3 8cyl turbos as well as other people and theres a site on TN about E16 ERFs
that was the 16 litre engine
IICR all gardner company cars was fitted with gardner engines even a mk9 jaguar…Its Astle park steam rally this weekend 14/15 August the Gardner 2 stroke engine is usually there on show.if its their i,ll get a photo and post in next week.
John
3300 john cheers for that mind you I should have known someone on here would have all the info, the shows you mention sound great but too far for me and I dont have the time at w/ends to travel that far pics though would be a bonus, I don
t have that much experience regarding gardners but its interesting all the talk of them running backwards as I worked for a cousin in the 60s when I was a kid and he was a car breaker and his partner ernie booth was always talking about it but I was never sure if it was true as he told a lot of tall tales, cheers mate fred m
A few more random pics from SoM Alloa Depot. Unfortunately this is about the sum total of the photos I have.
Hiya Frank some quality shots there!!! One of those 4 wheeler Guy’s would have done me at the time! However I haven’t finished with the “Aircleaners” yet!!! Dennis.
Right lads pay attention especially you traffic office boy’s at the back you might learn something!!! The shot was taken in the depot in later '76 I would say. From L to R a K. Fell SA 250 ■■■■■■■ and it has a "round filter"out of sight.Next is a Bewick SA 240 LXB with round filter. Then a new GUY Big J 180 LXB and having a round filter on the rear of the cab. Then a Bewick ERF with ----wait for it ---- a GKN Farr filter! Then at the end another Guy Big J which quite possibily has a 240 LXB but it is just too far away to make out so you will just have to take my word for it !!!The round filters used to be referred to as “cyclical” or something similar. Hey! hey! wake up at the back there I’m going to ask questions on the subject next!!!

hiya,
Even in model form that little beauty brings back memories of days long gone, did some for the BRS in one identical to that often wish it had only been that size when it was raining and the whole outfit wanted roping and sheeting, all those years ago,and seems like only yesterday, doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun.
thanks harry long retired.

Hiya “H” thats a hefty “jaw” on the fron’t of that MM you’d pull a B*****k lifting that back up! Although I bet the one on the fron’t of your motor “H” would have remained “brand new” and un-used!! A top waggon and drag man had no need to put the trailer on “the nose” did he ? Cheers dennis.

hiya,
Dennis must admit to doing a spot of “nosing” in my early days and even in my latter days of wag and drag driving, must have been a bit rubbish eh?, never demolished nowt though and the gaffers never ordered me to hang up my spurs, now then don’t tell me your good pal Mr P never ever sneaked it on the front maybe when he thought you wasn’t watching and things was a bit tight, no, i know different.
thanks harry long retired.
Dennis I think the circular Air Cleaners were known as “Cyclonic” Air Cleaners. Ah! the Mk 5 AEC the last and best, proper AEC made, the Ergo in my opinion being just another Leyland ruin of a great motor IMHO. Over to Chris…Tony.
Hiya “H” & Tony the sort of “nosing” I"m on about is not the “brown” variety!!! I think the pre Ergo cabbed AECs were “a few quid more” than the Leyland LADs and possibly the Leyland 680 Power Plus had the edge performancewise. But if I had to go back to being a “mate”(only proviso would be if Eric was sat behind the wheel)I would preferr to sit in the Ergo cab but when did a mate have a say!!!PS I think the “kipping” position was much more comfotable!! I rest my case.cheers Dennis.
