Smart Motorway Tips for Dummies

I’ve had lots of fun recently undertaking, erm I mean ‘passing’ lots of traffic on the inside on the M6 between J10A-9, including lots of HGV drivers who ought to know better. It’s nice to have miles worth of empty lane ahead of you. ‘Congestion Use Hard Shoulder’ really shouldnt be that hard to understand. Why is the government spending millions on upgrading to smart motorways if they aren’t going to educate people to use them?

That’s correct. As I said on the other thread the idea is to turn a 3 lane M.way into a 4 lane M.way, the purpose being to ease congestion in peak times.
These muppets including unfortunately (but not surprisingly :unamused: ) truck driving muppets, turn it back into a 3 lane thus defeating the object.
After saying that, like you I also take full advantage of this

One of the problems is the wording on the sign. I’ve heard many people, including drivers who drive for a living and should know better, who think that the sign means you can only use it when there is actually congestion. Missing the point that it’s in use to prevent the congestion. Take that ‘C’ word off the sign and I think more might understand and use it.

On the other hand I like when it’s empty and you can make good progress passing the terminally bewildered on their nearside. :stuck_out_tongue:

You can’t make me use that hard shoulder!

That’s very true; you can’t make somebody display good roadcraft, an understanding of the most basic rules of the road and not be a lane hogger. That’s life unfortunately. :stuck_out_tongue:

I do this every day on the M6 n/bound between J6 (spaghetti) and J7.
You can almost feel the waves of anger and frustration emanating from the planks “stuck” in lane 1,followed by their pathetic attempts to overtake,or sometimes swerving towards you trying to force you back into your rightful place …eat my sidebars dude

Point 2 & 3 seems very over complicated :exclamation:

Maybe merge them into

“You were given eyes for a reason :astonished: , use them and react to what you see ahead preferably not at the last minute” :open_mouth:
