when your on the go down tight lanes you can just forget about the gears and concentrate on keeping those mirrors in one piece.

It’s drivers than need to put any level of thought into gear selection that these auto box’s were invented for, to a good driver, gear selection is instinctive & seamless and can be done while giving plenty of “concentration” on road position.

Have you ever driven an auto?

I’ve tried driving mine in manual but I tend to forgot about it, and wonder why it’s not changing.

I’ll take over sometimes either by driving in manual for a short while, like when I was climbing a steep icy hill last week with a large machine on board or ploughing through a quarry. Or sometimes just flicking the paddle to encourage an up / downshift a bit quicker than letting it respond to my right boot.

Just curious, thanks.

The only truck I would have a manual on is a daf, when I get in a daf and see a gearstick I start to smile. Other than that auto all the way.

Is that be because the daf auto box is the spawn of satan :open_mouth: :grimacing:

Taffos!

I agree, dafs only seem right with a manual.

Yes and found with progressively worse application in MAN and Iveco and flip knows what else, a truly hateful gearbox that can only have designed in hell when the gaffer was in a particulary foul mood.

I like DAF’s 16 speed manual too, propers drivers lorry so fitted.

Which brings problems with Iveco who fit the same box as the Stralis is only generally available with the auto, there are some mauals about but I think they’re some kind of special order for big fleet customers.

I’ve only driven one MAN with this box and that was much better than in a DAF or Iveco, I havn’t driven a 2 pedal Opticruise but I’m told it’s much better than the one with a clutch pedal and as per the general consensus the iShift is definately the choce of the bunch, luckily I drive one of these every day.

The AStronic fitted to the DAF is bloody awful and it does spoil the XF, its so slow in operation even in manual mode.
I would go for a manual box every time. Good easy boxes to use were the eaton twin splitter, you only needed the clutch to pull away and the same can be said for the fuller.
Both these boxes need abit more skill to operate but once mastered they are a dream.

I hate synchromesh boxes as most are very heavy when cold and you to push the clutch to the floor to change gear and use the splitter

Some of us drove lorries and most have only ever driven big boys toys. That aside the eye, brain and hand can multi task where as the so called auto box can only do that which it is programed to do. Think about this the next time you are in heavy traffic at a junction or roundabout or when you need to drop alot of gears fast to keep moving with out going into neutral and starting off again.

I have driven 3 pedal Opticruise for the last 6 yrs, first on an 06 and now on a 62 plate. The gearchange on the new motor is a bit smoother but its got the overdrive 12th as apposed to the straight 12 speed, and now they are turning the limiters back to 52 (to try to save fuel bull sh**) it will be up and down from 11th to 12th like a whores knickers…
I came off the M6 at Tickle trout the other day heading for Settle via Skipton and the Driver tips on the computer was showing 44%, I put it in manual and by the time I got to settle it was showing 72%, so much for an automatic… having said that I`m getting old and lazy so its autos for me.

I hope never to have to drive a manual again. Manuals are for drivers that like to pretend this is a hard job

I was always “manual for tippers” until I tried a Daf. Once I got used to it I’d happily drive an auto all the time. Now I’m handballing flour lot, I appreciate the hired Volvo and MAN wagons we’re currently using, and I noticed the extra effort yesterday whilst driving one our own manual Dafs.
Even my dear old chap prefers his 2 pedal Scania and he’s a Foden man.
