We have a mix of DAF’s and Renault’s in our yard, and I know which I prefer, even of the exhaust brake in a Renault is also crap!
We have Renault units at the minute and other than being cheap and having a weak retarder I have no complaints. Piece of slosh to drive, auto gearbox only rivalled by Volvo

Russian as in never rush a gear change they don’t like it weather manual or auto
My MAN reversed a treat once it had selected. It needed a bit of a break before selecting.
However my Actros is a pain in the beaularks.
It’ll either four cough like the clappers, or it won’t go anywhere. And then part way through the reverse it’ll start slipping the clutch and go nowhere at all. Makes you look a right berk. You’ll have your head hanging out of the window and you can see other drivers sat in their cabs, thinking “why’s he looking backwards but not actually going anywhere?”
