So…Does a double decker handle the same as a single decker?
Excuse my ignorance, but having never driven a bus, I would have thought that the handling of the vehicle would be different, is it?
Not noticably if you’re in and out of vehicles and also you never really get upto any speed, so the height doesn’t usually become an issue.
When I started on the busses, you had to do a seperate day out with a trainer before you could drive all the busses, they called it VF (vehicle familiarisation) and showed you what all the buttons did etc. They also insisted that if you were going onto a double deck in the 1st year, you stayed on double decks for at least that week, preferably longer.
Saying that, we also still had a skid pan and side ramps to see how far you could lean a decker to get confidence in them

If you’re driving a single decker all the time and then get chopped over to the double decker and either aren’t paying attention or are distracted then it is possible to forget you’re in a decker!
Whats the difference between swapping from single to double decker, or changing to different height trailers/containers, especialy when you consider that its not just a similar cab with a truck but the same one. Sorry but you have to be aware, and the plod dont allow for any excuse, so you shouldnt either, then you wont put yourself in that position
That bridge as already stated, has an alternative level crossing beside it, and it is blatantly obvious, and I have seen alot off single deckers use the level crossing. Seriously there is no excuse to this one. Bad driving

Read my post a few up, as I state in that post, bus drivers get a given route to follow, the only time they go off route is to get to the start / end of route, sometimes if really late they may get pulled halfway down a route or whatever, it’s when people who are told EVERYTHING get given carte blanch to find their own way that things go wrong.
As I said, we have to deal with it day in and day out on trucks, that’s just the way this job is, busses isn’t.
Very unlikely to hit a bridge with people on - although still happens but this is when people run off route or a ■■■■ up in planning - due to the vehicle and route being pre-planned, pre-checked and pre-agreed.
Diversions also cause a lot more trouble for bus drivers than for us, because once off route, they’re just determined to get back on route asap for the passengers, whereas we’ll go ‘ahh, there’s a bridge, I’ll go this way instead’
I’m not defending the driver, I’m just explaining how it could happen easily in that industry.
Considering how often it happens to trucks compared to busses, I think you’re blowing this way out of proportion
No Satnav has ever got a vehicle stuck under a bridge.
i’ve spent a lot of time driving premiums, 99% of which were of the high roof variety, one day i was in one with a low roof, i knew this because it’s really easy to tell the difference when i was walking up to it! but at some point during the day i tipped the steering wheel out of the way and stood up like i normally did, ■■■■■■■■ my head on the roof that 99% of the time wasn’t there.
now all of you lot can’t be the one exception that proves the rule - everybody makes mistakes
The beam looks a lot higher than the bridge?
Simple soluton where bridge strikes occur regularly:
Fit a red & green traffic light system (similar to tunnels in Europe) with the red triggered by a height sensor electronic beam a few hundred metres back.
even simpler solution, read the signs !

You obviously didn’t see the sign at the top of this thread that was telling you signs don’t always work !!
What puzzles me is not why the driver has hit it, that`s obviously cause he went to the Stevie Wonder driving school, but, if there is a way over for over height vehicles why is there any need for a bridge for vehicles to go under in the first place.

An alternative to the level crossing, reduce congestion etc
Found this on Google Streetview, although it wont let me go up too and under the bridge
(My guess is that the Google car was over the height)
Seems it is 9"6

I’m pretty sure even single deckers are over 9’6" ■■ I can’t remember for sure though, it’s been many years since I drove one and the old brain matter has been drowned in much alcohol since then
edit
Nope, should be fine, single deck’s are around 8’ according to google searches and results in adverts - 2.4 - 2.6 metres.
Surprised a single deck could get under and still will never understand why I double deck didn’t just stop in front
