Shortage of Agency Drivers (Daily Mirror)

The agency I work for and who has always secured my work is looking for LGV/HGV drivers for ongoing work.
This once again I can confirm by my own experience as they have not let me down as these owners want to grow their business not put numbers on books.

Not sure if I can advertise the agency so inbox me and I’ll supply details. They are based in Derby, however are a franchise.

Driver Hire then.

WhatTF did “Ongoing Temporary” ever mean by the way?

What gave it away?

Driver hire is one of the worst ones in my opinion…

The fact you said it was a franchise, and the general way in which you’ve posted in this thread…

Pimpdaddy:
. Btw wtf is DSS…?

Department of Social Security !

Agencies should be ■■■■■■■ banned outright. They are the scum of the earth and have lowered wages so much it’s ridiculous. If a firm wants something driving, why can’t they hire someone directly on “job money”

It’s these greedy scheming low life agencies that have completely drained the so called job market in the leeds / West Yorkshire area.

If I type my postcode into gov.uk, limit to a 10 mile radius, over 19000 jobs come up. I bet over 95% of them are agency offering peanuts. The ones that are offered by firm directly pay little more than NMW

I saw a job advertised last week (not agency) , class 1, MUST HAVE LOW LOADER EXPERIENCE, must have HIAB, must have Plant equipment experience. And the pay? A grand total of £7ph for a national firm. Disgusting.

Most of those jobs advertised aren’t ‘real’, I hope you do know that…

They even ashamed to admit it’s them advertising; “Company Confidential” is how they appear on Directgov-but then post the number of their Oxford office. Anyone care to drive from anywhere to Tewkesbury for Bensons for Beds on £7.50 ph, no expenses due to umbrella minimum wage rules?

Agencies didn’t create the market.
Firms don’t want to pay the proper going rate any more, so they’ve adopted a “just in time” japanese model for covering runs.

In the old days, an extra run might be offered to a full timer as overtime.
However, since full timers were moved to maxed-out basic hours contracts (just to give them a basic wage) there’s now no room for overtime on many full timer’s duties anymore.

Thus, the need to call someone in at short notice became an “ongoing demand” for regular bods offering such cover.
Why bother employing someone full time when you can just cover at short notice, because some idiot is prepared to do it?

Firms and lickcock drivers “I’ll get up half an hour before going to bed to take your call guv, run bent, won’t complain, and all for the minimum wage!” are the ones that created the market. It’s trying to navigate through the middle of such a swamp that draws upon one’s skills as a pro driver. There are higher rates and cushier jobs out there to be covered on agency if you look hard enough.

The market must be deep indeed if so many agencies are still around though. I don’t wish them to be fewer and bigger, because Manpower and ADN would be the result - “Too big to fail, too big to care”.

Too small agencies just don’t have enough work to keep the same drivers available for regular work though.
Thus, both extremes are bad for all concerned. The middle way is the only happy medium you might say.

. Goes to a white screen, then double posts… :exclamation:

I think the government intends to replace us drivers at the incoming end with “take this job or lose your benefits” people now able to be aged 18 rather than 21 that don’t really want to be there, let alone for the crap money that abounds.

I wonder how many of the public need to be killed by wet-licnesed ex-dss teenagers before the market becomes proper supply and demand driven again?

Honestly. Our moneymasters have got a lot to answer for with this two-edged inflation we have nowdays. :imp:
Their pay and conditions as Lawyers, Politicians, Bankers, and Directors never seems to go down after all. :imp: Nice manipulation when you’re the ones with the hands on the levers of power - just enslave everyone else whom you’re supposed to be “serving”.

All true with above posts and no companies are offering 0 hours contracts too. So no work no pay.
If you don’t preform they cut your hours making you leave to go elsewhere.

Or, they cut your hours to give to someone else. I was asked by a client “are you free for the next 5 nights if we ask for you?” I replied yes and they booked me (had a call from agency confirming). After third night I get the call saying “client have cancelled next three nights.” Accepted this but I got suspicious when a week later, some days were cancelled after client asked for me for a week. After reading posts on here I realised the agency were simply giving my work to someone else. We all need to work but why should I be used to give work to someone else?

That’s what I mean the majority are agencies trying to get people on their books.

Early on in this thread you state that you are a newly qualified driver.

Your experience of agency practices in the transport industry must be somewhat limited.

If you have come from a minimum wage nothingness, & see transport as a step up, then good luck to you. Most on here will wish you well.

But don’t come on here to ‘big up’ your agency, most of us have been there & done that. We know the truth of how they work.

I suspect Pokemon IS the Franchisee he mentions.

What? You’re saying that TNUK is populated with sock puppets !

at the end of the day i have worked on and for agencies, i have as a driver managed to get into some firms i would never have as a full time employee and as a recruiter i have had drivers get experience, jobs and skills. i have even gone out myself on a weekend to pass on knowledge to new drivers, i have taken calls at silly times of the day and night to save a driver going into a firm and looking a complete tool! but yes were are all scum and do nothing for the industry, the biggest issue with driving is the minimum wage its only 10 years ago when people were over the moon at less than £5 per hour.

personally as a driver i preferred agency work, having seen drivers do the same run day in day out, week in week out this kind of work would drive me mad :imp:
