Hi sepo.Just looking at your pics of the Claribel wagons.I used to go to school with a lad called John McGrew he left at the same time as me in 1962 age 15 and he lived about 6 doors away from us on Ashton Old Rd at the fairfield end I wonder if that could be the same lad in the photo of the beast as you called it I have added this again sepo dont know if you have seen it.
These loveley photos bring back memmories , I used to load back from Claribells 50/60s Mr Ogden, I used to load at various places , Berry Wiggins, C.W.S. Pollard Str. & bales of cloth for export, At Tyne Dock North Shields, happy days.
A couple of old photos from companys who at one time during the 50s/60s were based in the Manchester area
This one was passing through.
Hi John, I dont think it will be the same John McGrew the chap who drove at Claribels was from America. Sepo
Can any of you Manchester Boys remember a firm called British Arcady, near Trafford Park, they were not Transport people, the made bagged pastry for bakeries, I used to load there in the 50/60s, Cracking set of blokes, they were very helpfull, not like some places I went to, where they went out of their way to be RSLS, , these blokes even helped you to sheet up, any memmories lads.?.. Regards Larry
Hi ,remember British Arcardy very well. They were on Seymore Grove in Old Trafford(think they still are under new name?)
Collected there every day when on Trafford Park run for Ripponden & District Motors.I would pick up about 20 drops for school canteens all over Yorkshire,in the late 60s.
They did a lot of Yorkshire pudding mix,and I often was given a “torn bag” to take home.As you say great blokes
Regards John
Backloaded a few times late 70s through, I think, Munro Transport. What a mixed bag of cereals, flakes and soya that lot was and as old 67 points out no one droppers from that mob.Upwards of 12 deliveries when you would eventually “get up the road” Bakeries, butchers to Ice cream manufacturers ( often wondererd if Ice cream tastes better if made in the tightest of little spaces and usually at the end of a cul de sac )
My problem was the short trailer and you would normally have the dromedary look about you by the time your pallets went on top. As you lads will know it wasn’t particularly heavy but the top pallets had an awful effect on those below and it wasn’t long before it all started to settle. Anyone coming up behind might of thought we had a cylinder under the sheets.Nor was it only the trailer that had the hump British Arkady aarhhh. Thanks for the memories lads.
Another haulier I used to back load off, Max Robinson, brown motors I think, I used to load at Aplin & Barrat, Ancoates area ?, with butter, & cheeses allways a few drops around Stockton/Newcastle area. good clean loads, The good old days, Larry
CRS opposite Salford docks was another handy one for “Nippover” backloads if all else failed. 3 ton here then nip over to Middleton and…
This old magazine pic reminded me of the typical pick ups at the time. 2 or 3 ton of abrasives etc for the Saw Centre,Eglington St Glasgow. Handball off. Wonderful. I hasten to add both items below were of little interest to a 3 year old and I’m far too young to know what thirteen and a tanner was
