Sherran's ... and other Manchester firms

a few tippers

Cheers Rob/737pilot

No, I never worked for Dewsburys. The only Dewsbury drivers I know by name are from the mid 70’s when I was yard lad for a couple of years at Unsworth. They had 3 Foden units then, an S39 and 2 S40’s plus some Foden 8 legger brick wagons. The S39 had to be rebuilt after colliding with an overturned container wagon,so I was told, the driver escaped though. They also had a works Foden S40 on loan for some weeks when one or maybe more, of theirs had to go back due to some German steel Fodens had used for the chassis which had developed cracks. They also got their first CF bulk tipper around then, which would disappear for weeks at a time into the system if dropped at Nuneaton,up to then they had a couple of dropsiders which had the hydraulics driven by a donkey engine and could’nt be used on offal.

Does anyone from the area know what firm it was back in the mid 70’s, that had around half a dozen ERF and Leyland.
Red and Marroon tippers based on this bit of land, they had no name on them.

Taken today whilst passing their yard Oldham Rd Manchester.
Hadfields who were once a removal firm originate from Old Street Ashton U Lyne where they were based during the 50s before they moved to sheply ind estate in Audenshaw nr M/chester and then moving to the depot they are in now.

They actually moved from old st. to the bottom of oldham rd.in Ashton before moving to sheply.I drove one, of the only 2 artics they had at the time, Colin tweedie drove the other one These came with george peck from glossop when they bought him out.in 1968 or 69 and made him manager .

Hi Rocky7
Yes they were at the bottom of oldham rd in what was once the coal depot in the 50s and it is now a bingo hall,I had forgotton about that place.By the way not seen you on here for ages, did you ever get hold of them Shockledge wagon pics from your mum?

Another operator although still in earthworks I dont think they run tippers anymore! :frowning:

Hiya…As i mentioned before i seved my apprenticeship at J H Jennings in Sandbach who was a highley recomended
body builder. they was known not to give a price for a job if you could,nt afford them go else where.
This brings me to say that the(6) Maggi 6 leggers tipper,s was all sprayed at Jennings to a very high standard.
Dark blue chassis and silver cab with dark blue lettering.

I used to drive the LL for Jones, then went onto the Deutz tippers when building the Mancunian Way,good days, good “crack”.
I think Jones are part of Norwest Holst?

David

Thanks for the detection work John, I remember taking that old punishment unit out sometimes in it’s later years when my DAF went in for servicing. They also had another … “F72” just like it, but both scrapped I think just about the time they moved out to Oldham.

Anyone from around the Manchester area remember a demolition company during the 60s/70s called O Sullivan Bros? iirc they ran LAD cabbed reivers at the time and were I think painted blue in livery. Not certain if they were from the ancoats or ardwick area of the town.(Tipit or Ovlov) may know of them I would have thought.

yes john they were on store street off the london road had quite a lot of kit at one time they were a similar outfit to pp oconnor they moved in the 70 s to denton then became windmill dem . do you remember ernie lappins on hyde road

Thats the ones Bob-lad,although I didnt realise they moved to denton.I knew two of the lads who worked for them as self employed mechanics 2 brothers they were, they somtimes came around to Biestys and did a bit there aswell when we were mowed out with work.Ernie Lappins rings a bell.

think the motorway may have gone thro lappins they were on a farm on the left going towards m’c , there was a chap near me lived behind the urmston pub was a fitter for gerry osullivan for years the tackle was well turned out with plenty of traditional sign wrighting

John G Winterbottom of Hyde.Is he still around ? I havent seen his lorries about for a couple of years now,the last time I saw them they were tipping at a site in the Mossley area of Tameside with his Volvo & DAF.
