Aye,they aren’t as fierce as they used to be,it’s that bit of Viking in 'em tha sees.Your neighbour’s son was lucky he got across on ferry, mind you it’s lovely and calm now so she’s off in a bit to do another jag from Heysham.

he’s not fierce chris , or a manxman . buxton born and bred , another tax exile like yourself . he’s younger than you though , so he could be diluting the manx bloodstock a bit , cheers , dave

I was happily reading this thread, then all of a sudden it was about sheep :open_mouth: I’ve always said that one day I’m going over The Shap - it was folklore when I was growing up…

Don’t worry about the sheep Sarge, its just a bit of banter among a few of us.I have been over Shap several times, but not as a lorry driver.Like yourself I had heard and read about Shap and other roads that were the main arterial routes before the motorways.Stick to your guns and take a trip over Shap, its well worth it.
Cheers Dave.

Hi The Sarge,
To admire the wonderful views from the A 6 between Kendal and Shap , pick a day when the weather is fine.
Don`t forget to bring your own wellies if you make the journey this weekend , BOTH snow and hungry sheep
on summit layby !!
Cheers , cattle wagon man.

Sarge I agree with Dave it is a pleasant enjoyable experience but if this thread shocks you don’t go on to the oldest members thread as most are certified on there and if you are of a delicate disposition it maybe to much for you    :unamused:

Hi when i worked for Pickfords[removals]in Enfield,we shared the yard with the heavy haulage side of Pickfords one of the drivers told me that one of the bridges on the m6 had a 100 ton weight limit, and heavy loads had to go through shap village if this is true, perhaps sammy can let us know.

Hi Jeff I think there was at one time wether it is still the same I don’t know but from Sheffield we usually routed up the A1 and A66 but did do a few loads out of manchester area and we did use shap A6 but it could have been before the M6 was completed.
cheers Johnnie

Morning Dave.,actually it’s afternoon but so dark here I thought it were neet. A bit of snow in Douglas this morning, all gone now, plenty on t’tops though…had a look mesen earlier…

Off out for a sneklifter this afternoon, putting world to rights, well as much as you can with Manx,Scottish,Mancunian and Dee-dah input. :stuck_out_tongue:

Now this is what you call a “real sheep” or Tup to be exact !!! A champion Rough Fell bought for £ 5500 gns.If you think it is looking a bit traumatised you’d be right,as it’s just had a terrifying ride back from Kendal auction mart on the top deck of CWM’s Leyland Boxer waggon !!! The Rough Fell breed which is only found around the Kendal and Sedbergh areas is renowned as superb producer of both an excellent carcass and the finest of wool. The Rough survives and does very well on the high fells of the area, only the Lakeland Herdwick can live and thrive at a higher altitude and although it is well known for producing tasty meat it’s wool is far coarser than the Rough Fell breed but is extremely hard wearing with one of the uses being for top quality carpets. Baaaaaa! Baaaaaa! Bewick.

See if you can spot Bewick the shepherd with his Dog Jay.

O.K. , lads. I `ve climbed Shap and took these photos in late September this year .
Tommy Knowles & son bringing the pride of their Rough Fell ewes and lambs down from the fells , ready for sorting for the annual R.F. breeding sheep sale .
The photo is taken at long range , from the roadside of the A 6.

The second photo shows a close-up as they near the sheep pens .

Cheers , cattle/sheep wagon man
