hi all, POSTMANpat. iwas under the impression that the speed limit was going up to 50. as alot of you have said doing 50 would half over taking , your evey day car driver and reps will be used to over taking ,but your holiday makers and people that dont go far would be contet to follow at 50. lets face it 40 was speed limit when trucks were having a job to reach it. look how trucks and all brakes have altered. charlie
Hiya… the speed limit for lorries was 28mph until 1964.their was many lorries that only did 32 mph.
when the lorry plateing system was introduced(1969) this moved many 30mph lorries off the road but their was still some slow lorries around until the mid to late 70’s. cor when you was doing 60mph you soon caught up a 30mph lorry when on the motorway, the last lorry i can remember was a 8 wheeler Leyland that carried steel, it traveled from the midlands to Manchester daily at 28 mph(it was blue with a red chassis) i bet many older drivers can remember it.
John
On my way to work this morning on my scooter on the A45 when i came up behind a Tesco truck. It was clear that he was doing 40mph so i overtook him. As i got further up the road i noticed in my mirrors that a truck was over taking the Tesco wagon and was gaining on me very quickly. I was in the limiter that the bike can do (62MPH) and he was catching me up. It was a nice slight stretch and the road was empty, but he was half going some.

I enjoy reading your posts John, I can’t even begin to imagine what it was like in the “olden days” and the difference in the industry between then and now must be huge.
ROG:
When another LGV starts to overtake do you immediately ease off to assist it ?
Are you seriously suggesting that I should assist someone else to break the law?
If someone wants to overtake why not let them just get on with it, far safer for everyone, far better he goes round you than sitting to close behind, if i do it, its not ment as some kind of personal attack i just dont like doing 40, but if you do thats absulotely fine.

So are you saying that was safer than if the truck being overtaken had been running at around the same speed as the one overtaking was.In which case the one behind wouldn’t have caught it up and therefore removing the need for the overtaking truck to bother with overtaking it .

It’s not ‘absolutely fine’ at all because effectively what it means is that the totally unrealistic 40 mph single carriageway truck speed limit and the rigid enforcement and adherence to it is creating an obvious hazard on the road considering that every overtaking manouvre is a risk, especially when it involves vehicles with the zero acceleration and length issues of LGV’s.

I am suggesting that you should make a situation as safe as possible
If the red mist has descended on another driver, then all bets are off as there’s absolutely nothing I can do to make the situation safer. That was their decision…it’s completely out of my hands.
Anyway, with Microlise fitted to our trucks, when my boss examines the data and asks me why do I keep on braking and accelerating all the time…what should I tell him?

Please explain why you cannot make the situation safer ?

Which part of the best way to make the situation safer, would be for all concerned, including the law in it’s enforcement,to treat the single carriageway 40 mph truck national speed limit, with a lot of discretion, which in many,if not most, cases would mean it’s ok to travel at a reasonable rate of speed ( on the limiter would be fine ),to avoid the need for others to overtake, don’t you understand.
