Your self employed the Statius says it all

thought so,

Thanks Mate.

Ive gone self employed but working from a few different agencies, get a better rate than PAYE - not huge but better.
I havent gone the VAT route as i dont anticipate making over 40K. I will be claiming my mileage/daily food , equipmment for job - sat navs ,pc, office furniture etc. Not a lot to claim for i think, have an accountant who will do my books for £600 per year but when i ask what i can claim for as a driver she is a bit vague and says " anything for the company". Im a little apprehensive as i dont want to get handed a huge bill at the end of the year with a " oh , you cant claim for this or that or this" . Finding another accountant has been suggested!

Obviously i get as many receipts as i can but not all burger vans etc do receipts for food  so i will claim £5- £10 per day depending on start time and length of shift.
Claim my mileage to all different locations for work @45ppm
Theres a few other bits i can claim for like laundry, postage, mobile phone, internet,PPE etc but cant find a difinitive list of what i can or cant claim for.
Im told i cant claim for entertaining clients - but someone i know who is self employed claims for meals to " glad hand" clients ■■

If I take the agency guy down the pub for a pint and a bit of food - because it puts me in his good graces and gets me more work- cant i claim as company expense ■■

Anything i buy for the company can be offset against your tax bill, to minimise the company profits and basically pay less tax, hopefully putting a bit more £££ in my pocket!

££££ in my pocket is why i went self employed, i’ll try it for a year or so see how it goes, if it doesnt work out much better than paye, ill go back to being employed, might even get to see my family then! :unamused: :astonished: :astonished:

I take between £500 - £900 pw class2 work depending on who i work for ( before tax)5 or 6 days. A few of the agencies i work for try to pay as little as they can, but if you stand your ground and your a decent driver (reliable/no accidents etc) you can command a bit more, i wont work for less than £9ph , not worth it! The agency save a bit when your self employed so they can pay a bit more, they just try not to!

Demonbiker I stand to be corrected but I thought that the compulsory VAT threshold was around the £56k mark, not 40k. Obviously you can register for VAT if you want on any turnover at all.

You can cannot claim the pub bill from when you took your boss/chum out. This is considered business entertainment and is not accepted as a business expense with regards to taxation. A few years ago I thought this would be allowed with my other business and used to this a couple of times a month to then find out from the revenue that this is not a allowable expense. You can claim food and drink for yourself, the revenue sets this is out in Section 3 of The Enactment of Extra Statutory Concessions Order 2009. But note you can only claim lunch if you are not going to your normal place of work. In terms of agency work this means you can normally always claim a lunch allowance because you will rarely visit the agency office.
