Scruffy Lgv drivers

robroy:
Never thought of that tbh…, …even so maybe a bit ott. How is the bottom of your knees to the top of your boots a hygeine issue (in real life, not h and s world that is) unless he was wearing crotchless hotpants
Another point the same co. different branch in Scotland have no such ban.

Depends on the site. I’ve been to places that make food packaging and I’m wandering about the place with no booties on or a hairnet yet I can go into another place where I just step across the threshold, the site foreman will yell at me that I’m not supposed to be in there without booties or a hairnet. I had a load of paper rejected because it was up against a pallet of barrels containing mechanical greasing agent without a sufficient barrier. The drums were shrink wrapped to the nines as well as being vacuum sealed.

switchlogic:
Generally I’m in smart dark jeans, colourful polo shirt or long sleeved shirt, I love smart check shirts, wax jacket or quilted jacket and polished boots. And jumpers in winter. Oh and of course a selection of flat caps for inclement weather! I rarely wear just uniform, only when I know a job will be a grubby one

What about the Autumn collections for this year? I’m going earthy rustic brown shades with hints of mountain evergreen myself.

Work in the mud around Banbury. The ironstone deposits will give you and your vehicle matching “earthy rustic brown shades.”
“Agency drivers’ lunch” is still popular for hi viz garments with optional agencys’ name embroidered on the back.
This sounds more like the paint section of B and Q.

Who cares if someone is fat or thin driving a truck… if they can do the job and they have passed a medical that’s all that matters …

Depends on the type of work, bulk tippers, waste, walking floors, you aint going in you’re best bib and tucker.

Im OK then as I pull those trailers, throw in occasional low loader and cattle trailer jobs im never going to be seen polishing my boots and ironing my clothes

That and I suppose I work for a company that likes the driver to work on the lorries as much as possible to limit call outs it can get a little hands on.

The fridge drivers running between RDC’s shouldn’t have any difficulty really in keeping clean.

The trick is to look presentable but not to over the top, shiny shoes and creases you could shave with won’t do.

Everyone then thinks you’re ex forces and totally incompetent.

Oi!, I’m ex forces, like many others on here, so a little more respect please.
I have been on the road since I left the forces 46 years ago, and I like to think I’m as competent as most other drivers, and more competent than some others!
I agree with a lot of what has been said, in my early days of trucking I used to collect cow hides from slaughter houses, all handball, you certainly don’t dress to impress doing that.
Like many others that did a bit of middle east, dress code away from home tended to be flip flops, shorts, shades and sun hat.
In my retirement job now I wear company uniform and shine my workboots.
Horses for courses!

I quite agree but image is now the thing, those not blessed with the ‘look’ don’t get on so well any more, wasn’t always the case when people weren’t impaled quite so far up their own arses nor took themselves quite as seriously as they now do.

Thing have been going downhill since about the 80’s, i saw something like ‘‘modern times’’ or some other guff on the telly probably late 80’s, a young woman the subject of one program couldn’t decide whether or not she should get a boyfriend, reason being that she wasn’t sure if it would be right for her image :unamused:  , says it all really.

Mind you some fat lorry drivers, (and i’m not exactly as trim as i once was, not as i ever won any beauty contests), don’t help themselves.

I’m reminded of my wife’s tubby friends who load facebook with stacks of images of volumptuos scantily clad women crowing on about big is beautiful, her fit mates don’t feel the need to do this.

Fat truckers are an eyesore, eat less walk more and lose some weight you salad dodging Mofo’s.

Fat drivers mates are a hazard. They stunk my cab out and always looked like they would need a defibrillator when carrying flour sacks on the level, never mind upstairs.
One gave me the “I just can’t lose weight” as they munched through two Mars bars, a pasty and a bottle of Pepsi.

Keeping off of clothing and onto weight; a colleague panted and puffed and sweated up 7 flights of stairs, (ferry lift u/s) to restaurant. Helped himself to lots of cold meats pates etc (ignoring salads), then roast with chips, plate of cheese and a huge helping of trifle.
Said “Are you going to the bar?”. “Ill go with you, but I cant drink pints, only shorts, as I`m on a diet.”
And as an aside he always drove with bottle of pop, bag o crisps and packet of biccies within easy reach of driving seat.

Look professional - think professional!

Ok its only a concept but I like to look presentable and polished boots are practically my trademark

Its a great post and i had to respond. My girlfriend on post 1 sees my hi viz as something really ■■■■, and i often wear it to bed ( if you know what i mean ) i dont know if its the hi viz with the staines on it, i think the latter because its mainly food, egg, beans tomatoes, mushroom fat, sausage grease etc, and i have told her on numerous occasions to allow me to sleep normally as the food stains were making her hungry, to the extent she was actually licking the waistcoat…which saved me a few times from washing it.

Being serious…i have always dressed smart, mainly because i have done distance work most of my career, i always polished my dr martins, made sure my jeans were smart and clean ( even ironed a crease in them ) today i wear trousers, with shoes and a Polo shirt/t/shirt with company logo in the same colour…I keep in my locker…overalls, and all of my PPE including the steelies…so am well prepared. There is no excuse for being scruffy, we are reasonably paid, most companies supply work wear ( which is i believe legal, incl gloves, boots etc ) even so a high viz is £2.99…but will this industry ever have an image ? i see well known companies, brand new trucks, nice paint work and matching trailers, and the scruffiest driver you have ever seen emerge…thats not acceptable.

Image is everything these days. No excuse for looking like stig of the dump. Asda do smart polo shirts, two for a tenner and smart trousers, 14 quid. Complete weeks wear for less than £60.
