Sorry Bubbs. I don’t see it as my thread, rather a thread that I started. Its open to anyone who has anything to contribute or comment upon.
You’ve obviously got some great brochures that others would without doubt enjoy. I’ll admit that I prefer to look at the pictures myself.

A new line in safety headgear, a trilby.

Avonmouth docks. A lot of goods that could not be cleared direct x ship were stored in railway wagons and then handballed onto lorries later.

Cheers Phil.

Brilliant brochures coming through as well as the photos Bubbleman, keep them coming please. The more the better.

Happy new year

Hi Marc a very Happy New Year to you some more of Chris Hill of Hills of Botley pics to help you toward 200

Going past the ‘New Southampton Swimming Baths’ in 1970 the lorry park was behind the baths. Pic taken from Southampton walls not far from the notorious ‘Juniper Berry’ pub.

The loads on their way out of Southampton just about to pass the Freightliner Terminal (Left)on Millbrook road

Going around the Millbrook Roundabout (There is a flyover there now) and off this roundabout to the left is the main entrance to Southampton Container port Dock Gate 20

Great photos Ainacs and I recognise the locations as well. There were some digs/cafe near that Freightliner terminal on Millbrook Road and I think Calor Transport had a place there as well.Further on towards Totton you turned left for Hythe and Fawley IIRC and South West Tar Distillers was there somewhere.
Been in t’Juniper Berry as well…

Heres a question, what happen to Athersmiths?,perhaps Dennis knows.

I’m pretty sure they were acquired by Brady’s, although I don’t know when

Hiya Bubbs and Chris,Happy New Year to you both! Brady’s did buy out Athersmiths when Billy Athersmith (the main brother) either passed away or retired in IIRC in 71/72.Jack and Bob had probably achieved a life long ambition to aquire their nearest competitor, but in reality Athersmiths didn’t bother Brady’s much at all as they were an older generation with an established customer base.Jack Brady ran rings round them in the Steel Works by using a night shunter and ensuring that all the traffic wasn’t released until late afternoon!! Apparently Athersmiths wouldn’t put a night shunter on and Jack was also quick off the mark when British Cellophane opened their new plant in Barrow in the late 50s,he got the job 100%.Jack did tell me the funny side of the A/smith aquisition that although the Big’un (Bob snr.)knew they had bought A/smiths out he didn’t know for how much and it took him 6 months to ask Jackie the quetion!!!I do ,however, believe that the buy out of A/smiths was really a hollow victory as Barrow Paper Mills closed shortly afterwards which had been the main A/smith customer it was always said that Athersmiths knew their customer base was going to take a dive so the timing was spot on.The A/smith fleet was fairly antiquated by this time and they had been highly unionised for years( basically idle backs) 23 MPH and all that cobblers! I don’t know how many drivers transferred to Brady’s but I know some A/smith men joined Blue Dart who had started in Barrow running out of Bowater Scott,so they left one union firm for another just as “hide bound”.Some other ex A/smiths went into Bowaters as well.In ealier years Jack and Bob had snapped up Furness Transport the main contractor out of the Vickers Shipyard and Brady’s were also very close to James Fisher the Barrow shipping line.Cheers Dennis.

Hiya Bubbs. Any chance you can put the Kamaz brochure pages on to the Sales Brochure thread? I’d love to see some more details of them.

Hi Chris

The Calor place is still there I believe it is where the old cafe was, there is a great big Calor shop not sure if is new or in the old building.

Yes further on you did and still do go over the Totton Causeway and left at the Houndsdown Roundabout to Hythe and Fawley.

Totton Tar is all gone now as is Burt Boltons Timber most of the Eling Wharf is now home to transport companies I know Harris Transport has a big area as well as Elite and whole lot more

Thanks Pat. the places I remember were ISR at Hythe and Esso Fawley in the early 70s.I suppose if I wanted to go further back in time I should ask Alton Confused Charlie? To pacify him I should add that I did tip and reload once out of SWTD in 1970 running from Orgreave Sheffield, and had a dodgy at Leicester Forest on my running out of time from Sheffield, and only 'cos I had an AEC MK5 Mammoth Major with a six speed box.
Years later we were running from Staveley Chemicals to ISR,load,tip/reload and back to Leicester Forest in an elastic shift and it was quite an easy shift it seemed to me (as long as you started about 0300 at Staveley). We also used to run BP Baglan Bay - ISR Hythe and it was my first introduction to the cafe/digs at Codford St Mary on the A36 between Bath and S’oton via Salisbury.

Hi Chris

Hillside cafe is still there although the Little Chef further along the road is now The Toran an Indian Restaurant! Not a bad thing I suppose
