Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

Did the 511 Buffalo reall develop 280bhp or is it a misprint,i`d of thought around 230bhp

I think that 230 was the advertised figure. Meanwhile, the L12 Buffalo offered a startling 203bhp, as I recall!

IIRC the L12 buffalo was about that output but it pulled surprisingly well, I guess the torque output was good for a large detuned motor.
I think it was a stop gap answer to the 511’s self destruct function.

Armstrong Saurer.

Milk bar with style. Not sure about the name today

Happy New Year All. Phil. 43 years on tankers and I have forgotten what a rope is again.

If that Tm had a Bedford 500 engine, it probably broke down before it was off trade plates

Hiya… why the bad word on Bedfords Suedhead. I.d been rearered on Gardners and ■■■■■■■■ on one occasion i got
a job on a bedford KM with a 500 engine.Well i must admit it scremed. but it scremed up and down the uk for many miles
and when it finally broke at 9 years i got another and another.I was last in this company and got the cast offs for the first 18
months untill i got a 2100 DAF. Can i say the Bedfords never let me down they just got worn out after 9 years hard work.
When running out of Manchester i could do 2 trips to Paisley loaded both ways a Southampton both ways and a Weatherby on friday. it was only a 4 wheeler but a good truck in its day.I earned some good pay slips on that job.
John

My Dad drove a KM before Smiths bought him a V reg TM; Pound for pound thought the KM was the better motor…something to do with the TM being too low geared and it’s plastic seats…

Perhaps i was unlucky
I drove a Tm 16 tonner and it didnt scream, you sure that you didnt have a Detroit under the cab ?
I had one on a V plate for a couple of years and in that time iirc it had a full and a short engine, not to mention the telescopic gearstick coming adrift on a roundabout in Norwich.
Mind you, it had a Locomotors sleeper conversion that leaked like a sieve and was the only cab i have woken up in with ice on the inside.
Bedfords - Happy days

Re - The Marwin Transport Dodge in the picture

My Dad worked for Marwin Transport & drove that Dodge on odd Occasions,
they had 2 of them, plus a Leyland Beaver, a couple of Seddons, an ERF LV an ild Atki & some Fodens.

They were part of Carmans (when Ron Carman was running the firm)
Carmans had a depot at Scholar Green, SToke on Trent, and opened another at Trowbridge,
They had the London E14 depot, at 44 Grenade Street, running under the Marwin Name,
and a depot at Felixestowe, running as Riley Transport,
All the Liveries were the same, Maroon Paint with cream signwriting,
There was a winged shiels on the cab doors, with either CT, MT, or RT lettered in the shield,
They pulled tilts Signwritten with BRAAMS International, BRIT European Transport on the sides,
The same shield appeared on the front of the trailers with the letters BIT BET in the shield

My Dad was the Night Trunker, the only one at that depot, and got the pick of the motors, He would often take one out that was parked up overnight by a visiting Carmans Driver (they had bunks in the yard over the transport office)

As a young lad, I often went to work with him. His & My favourite lorry was the ERF LV with Gardner 180, reg LVT 609E,
I spent many hours in the cab of that truck, and was once nearly run over by it (another story for another day) at Borough Market,

I would love to know what happened to it - probably been long since cut up >>>

I remember this one, may have even driven it. Simons were taken over (I think) by Geest, in the early days of the Sainsbury’s distribution contract running from the Allington depot we would do a fresh produce run starting from between 3 and 4.30 am, then once we’d returned, had some breakfast we’d go out and do farm collections, which was usually a great day, as you’d spend most of the day asleep waiting for the farmers to get the load together!

Hi Ramone. The photo of the BDA bedford is the only one that I have. Who were they.

Revman. Hi Alan I dont think my PM to you worked so here is the photo you wanted. Took about 1983/4 on the A37 Bristol.

Cheers Phil.

Been having a sort out of some old clippings and thought these might be of interest to someone

Sorry about chopping the top off this one, the clipping got damp and turned to dust :unamused:

Got a few more when I get sorted

Hello again, todays selection is slightly different…I’ve been to Shirleys Transport on a few occasions and always recieved a warm welcome, here are a few pics from the company…they certainly get their moneys worth from a wagon…before and after.

An F10 on the M4 to finish with…just to add to this, none of the pics are recent ones, probably a lot of the stuff in the graveyard have gone :frowning:

Cheers Bubbs,

Does anybody happen to know if Shirleys have still got the ERF LV 6 wheeler in the back of their yard?. Did it survive the recent clear out?. LTU922C was its number I think.

I remember seeing this 8-legger knocking about in the late 70s.

Hello again, good stuff from Phil and Trev…keep it coming boys

Hope I’ve not put any on before,

Cheers Bubbs,

What did the Super stand for on the Scania 80 Harry,my dad came off a Mandator in the mid 70`s and got a F86 which he preffered, mind the Mandator had no power steering and had done more mileage than the space shuttle, still pulled better than the F86 but it was cold and noisey
