Hello again,Big-Rig …yep more Suttons when these old odd size pics dry up…also some Ferrymasters were asked for too, again they will come soon.
The last pic is a bit rare,a twin engined D1000 6 wheel unit…Ralph Hilton had this one and BRS had another…anybody remember seeing it?..Harry,Dennis,Pat,Chris etc,one of you old hands must have come across it

Hi Marc I hope you are feeling a lot better now. The 6 wheel “D” series you have disturbed a dormant cell as I can just about recall the one BRS had I think it was two V 6 engines and there was some problem synchronising them or something of that nature they would be fine for a bit then start being awkward I think it was run out of one of the Midlands depots but I will come back to it if I can recall anything else or someone else’s input sends me into a thinking mode
cheers Johnnie
Hey Johnnie you just summed yourself up there good and proper like! Quote----“fine for a bit then start being awkward”!!! Seriously though the two Ford D1000s had twin Perkins V8s I believe as Ford never used the V6 ■■■■■■■■■■■ I will stand corrected on the matter though but only “cockeyed outfits” like BRS & HTS would be daft enough to operate such an abortion like this!!! Dennis.
Dennis I think that is why it based in the midlands because it was never far from a depot for the tow wagon
cheers Johnnie
P S our lass as me summed up she says I am not right in the head and never right so being bullied for nearly 45 years as taken its toll

By the look of that wild looking (zb) at the wheel of the ESL Sed/Atk I would suggest that it is “Fast Edward” himself!!!

hiya,
Just supping up, and if you really behave yourself i’ll tell you about the BRS Big J Consett depot ran, now that was some motor that had two 240 Percy’s working in tandem that will knock SOM’s motor into a cocked hat but it was only used in the yard so no’one ever got a picture of it, shame really.
thanks harry long retired.

Harry have you been taking extra “medication” as it seems as if Dennis as gone to bed to have nightmares now

There was a small article about the double engined Ford in Classic Commercial Mag not so long ago, it seems the throttle, clutch and gearchange were linked to operate in the normal way but this did give problems (not suprising the D1000 Ford’s were known as the lucky dip gearbox anyway) and the rear axles were driven separately by each engine, again sounds like a recipe for disaster. Not too sure what they were trying to gain from this experiment, what they gained in power to weight ratio must have been lost in reliability and two of those V8’s going hell for leather must have sounded like Bedlam. Having to work on two of those things squeezed into that chassis doesn’t bare thinking about and if they did use the older V6 to allow the fitment to work it would only be a short matter of time before they gave up the ghost.
Must go down as one of the strangest layouts tried in British Transport history, now there’s a subject for a new thread, what other weird and wonderful machines can you think of. No I don’t mean an 8LXB in a GUY Big J either ! Cheers Franky.
Hope Bubbleman isnt going to the dentist in Bradford just around the corner from Cliff Parrotts old yard. Wouldnt say he was bad but he got thrown out of the Gestapo for being cruel.
I’ve got a CM report about the Kenworth which I think dates from 66-68,it was geared to not much more than 40 which must have been a bit slow even then!

I can assure you that Ford used both the Perkins V8 and the ■■■■■■■ V6 in the D1000.
I was workshop forman in a Ford dealership in the early '70’s and they both kept us in work.
Well, well, Mr Bubbleman you really find them don’t you!
This one was driven, at one time, by Tony Hannaford (T&T Transport of Clyst St George Near Exeter). John Derrick also ran an tidy AEC Marshal 6x4, they were both in a dark maroon livery.
My Uncle once told me a about this lorry, there was boat in Exmouth Docks unloading grain maize. They were trying to get the last of it off & crammed as much onto the trailer as they could. Eventailly the sides of the trailer gave-way & the whole lot ended up on the quayside!
My Dad used to do a fair bit of work for John Derrick. I think this photo is at Otterton Mill near Budliegh Salterton in East Devon. Later on they had a store at Dunball, just of J23 on the M5 in Somerset.
