This one had a long and distinguished career, working on into the 21st Century as a 38 tonner!!
During its rebuild, 1994:
And during its final working life:
It’s now in preservation with a new owner in Lancashire, and has lost the tag axle along the way.
Sadly, Canning’s of Leyland fell by the wayside many years ago.
Marc,
Love the F86 of Thompson & Jewitt, another firm I had forgotten about completly, love the Volvo’s keep up the good work, excellent stuff.
A real off chance here, but do you have any cuttings or photos of the bread vans (Commers - I think) or Leyland’s used by Champion Bakeries in Stoke ■■?, My Grandad drove for them for many years and have asked and searched for ages for pictures but have had no luck yet.
Regards
Ant

The Stiller Maggie Deutz brings back memories.
They were use to carry bulk urea from Teesside then strip the side off to make a flat bed and re-load paper to come home with.
They also had one or two of same trailers with coil wells in them.
I got a nice surprise looking through the recent pages of this thread and came across the Van Hee Scania 112 B639 ENL. The units driver was a smashing lad called Alan Walton who had the vehicle from new, however Alan had a fall from the trailer when loading graphite rods and broke an arm, I think the Scania was only weeks old at the time. I was fortunate to be given the motor until Alan recovered and relished the chance to drive a 38 tonner, I was driving a four wheeler at the time until an artic became available. I had a great couple of months on the 112 and because I kept it in clean and tidy condition it seemed this didn’t go unnoticed and when holiday time arrived I would take over other 112’s while the lads were off. I do remember that first 112 well though and have good memories of good trips during the Summer months. Thanks for putting that pic up Bubbleman and all the others of classic motors, keep it up, Franky
Glad the pic of the Van Hee Scania brought back good memories Frankie…its nice for me to know that a silly bit of paper has created a bit of pleasure.
Just for a change…some trailers.
I bet the old Leyland on the front of the Ferrymasters tilt struggled with that on its back.also notice the lack of “Long vehicle” boards on a couple of the pics
Cheers Marc.
Hi Marc more great pics,
Re no long vehicle signs - could be either 'foreign registered like the ferrymasters or too early - don’t forget we had them first, just to stir up the grey matter when wre long vehicle signs first required?
Gavin
I seem to remember the long vehicle boards came in in 1970, because I had not been long at Banbury Buildings and the fitter was fitting them, unless anyone knows better.
I can give you the exact date as I came across this when trying to find the tacho compulsory date, it was from 1st November 1971 and again like the tacho’s firms would be fitting rear markers before this date. The article about the markers came from a December 1970 Commercial Motor mag and on the opposite page is an advert for Boalloy’s Tautliner which also answers a question asked on another thread about when Tautliners came about, the majority thought around the Eighties but certainly before Dec 1970 going off the ad.
Cheers Franky.
Hi Marc keep up the great work

Marc,
great post again, love the Firmin Coates Foden, used to sell them ERFs when I was there.
I’ve found this in the loft, don’t know where to post it really, so I’ll put it on here if you don’t mind, as it may provoke some memory, taken in Leek Staffs, about Oct 1982
Best Regards
Ant
Good pic. Ant.Can’t quite make out the reg.no.VRT237X? I bought an ex R.D. 142 in 1986 from Scantruck in purfleet.Came with a tag axle and full air kit though.I think it was VRT 236X,will try and dig out a picture of it.Managed to turn my hair grey in the three years i had it.
Thank you for all the work you have put in on this thread.
As a lorry driver for over forty odd years, I recognise many of the companies and vehicles you have put on here. I have spent the last couple of hours copying them into folders in my PC.
Thanks again.
Alex
