hiya,
thanks bubbleman what a thread i’ve looked at every pic read every word i retired from the industry some years ago,i learned to drive heavy stuff in the forces but had to wait a year before starting to drive for a haulier that was 1957 one of the first temp jobs it was holiday relief was for an eight wheeler and trailer outfit and the motor i had was a 1939 maudslay mikado an 18 year old thing still working and still pulling a drawbar needing a mate of course, iv’e mentioned this before on another post i never once took a truck pic i should have i worked for loads of firms and drove loads of different stuff have done tramp, trunk, abnormal indivisable loads some of it with an eight wheeler with the trailer set back for long stuff, done tanker work and local tipper just before i chucked it,bubbleman please can you find a pic of a maudslay mikado the one i drove was very similar to lloyds of ludlow maudslay meritor which i have a picture of thanks harry long retired.
Harry, I found this site. It might be of interest http://maudslay.fotopic.net/
Hi there, first a few proper photos of Maudsleys for Harry although not the model he’s after.
Now for some cuttings
Cheers then,Marc.
Is J Curtis the forerunner of Dave Curtis from Baynards Green , Bicester, ran F88’s in the late 70’s mate of mine Kevin Tagg drove for him, was quiet big in motor bike scrambling.in the 60’s.
Many thanks for all the pictures.the pics of the ERF A series reminds me when I worked for a removal firm in Coventry,H.J.Lake removals from Broad street,we were doing a removal from a big house near Hexham,we loaded the furniture into an A-series Transit (Remember them ,3 mile tow to start if it was cold) and the rest comprised 4foot high load on a 40trailer,even bagged the ashes ouy of the grate and took them!, left nothing behind.
The most memorable part was the journey back with only 3/4 ton load ,the seats would certainly never wear out in an A series, cos you’re never sat in them,I was black and blue by the time I got back.
Certainly a memorable motor, 30 years later.
Imagine driving to Doha in something like this!!!, I think I need to go and lie down,
Thanks and regards derek

Some more great pics Marc, thank you. I liked this A Series - obviously from when Pandoro first started and absorbed N.I.T. as it has an N.I.T. headboard
but the whole thing is in Pandoro’s blue-and-white colours, and the box even looks like it has a PD fleet number.
These were ‘Bulktainers’, used to load ‘Terephthalic Acid’ (a powder) from Wilton in bulk liner bags, for delivery to ICI FIbres in Kilroot. They would then
be re-loaded with finished fibre for delivery in England (often Derbyshire) and then run back up empty to Middlesbrough depot to go round again.
hiya,
thanks bubbleman nice maudslay’s seen the models before but not those particular pics, i think, not sure though the old girl i drove had been originally hand cranked but had a self starter when i drove it so must have had an engine change possibily during ww2 when it had been used by the ministery of supply or thats what i was told thanks.
hiya,
thanks ghostrain iv’e been on that site before mention of the mikado but no pics
thanks harry long retired
Hi again,a few more clippings.
Cheers Marc
bubbleman:
what was the point of these half cabs>? surely they didn’t save much weight?
bubbleman:
best looking cab of the 60’s/70’s IMHO (along with the BIg J). Pity there’s not more of these left
It was to save on windscreen wipers.
Not as nice as an Ergomatic Cab for looks or comfort.

To stop the driver picking up hitchhikers of course!
Give Mr Vain some problem with all his “nubile” Ladys ,
I never heard of anybody taking one to Doha or did they?.
regards derek.
Only driving that half cab until he get something more concrete!!!

And they didn’t have to give the driver the full rate of pay.
Adding my threepennath to the half cab Foden,my mate reckoned that there was one of A.R.Cs half cabbed tippers running out of the mendips and when it was school holidays the driver took his boy with him and he had to stand in the gap behind the drivers seat
…poor little sod!!
