'fraid not Ted this is a shot of one of the cars I ran circa 1974 IIRC. Last thing some of my customers would have appreciated if I had turned up in a Roller to ask for a 15% increase ! Now turning up in a Mercedes 450SEL no problem ! Cheers Dennis.

Dennis,

Promise to get it posted will have to ask my son though as I am a delinquent operator of technology, despite only being 57 yrs of age I have spent to long the other side of computerisation!! and recall to much pen n paper activity, how I manage to keep going in this modern world as a Dealer Principal of a franchised motor dealership lord only knows, I was probably better utilised down the pit under false lights 8 hours a day.

will try to get that pic on her should give all a laugh seeing me as a 17 yr old!!!

Never had a go in one or till now , knew anyone who drove one, or ■■■■■■■ for that matter. Most if not all my way had Gardners anything else was deemed tantamount to bankruptcy, which is strange considering that most ran Leylands in the 50/60s. I would imagine the 680 with the 12sp was a very good match but would I be right in saying that it was more a drivers motor than a gaffers. While I’m at it when did Foden stop fitting the Leyland engine

Foden with 680 leyland was a marriage made in heaven . My old s39 , Gardner , dropped a valve down at Cottesmore , fitter came out with the wrecker to tow me home on a straight bar . The s39 had never gone that fast , the 680 hardly slowed on the hills , it weighed about 14 tons , pulling 10 tons and 12 gears to play with , got to say though the noise in the cab was deafening . Dave

Nice motor of the time Dennis , did you buy it off Jack Regan when he quit the Sweeney?

We had one (or maybe more?) at Ballidon but before my time there, I know that Jim Banks from Longcliffe drove it at one stage. He said it went well but it was changed when the S39 and S50 Gardner powered Fodens arrived in 1971/72 and it was Gardner all the way then until the factory ‘troubles’ occoured and a couple of S80’s with Rollers appeared briefly in 1974.

Pete.

And IIRC Fords used the same engine in their Fordson commercials in the 30’s/40’s and into the 50’s. Cheers Dennis.

This is a depot shot of the first new Ford I bought following a new Hillman Hunter GT on the L reg the previous year. It was a 2000E and cost me £1850.Cheers Dennis.

Hiya,
I remember my Dad having a couple of these in their popularity era
and he was a very hard driver and knackered the engines in both of
them in quick time, something to do with the splash lubrication the
paddles on the con rods coming adrift if you overworked the engine
or were the paddles on the crankshaft I cant remember, someone
told me later cars had pumped lubrication to cure the problem and
no doubt the “old girl” above was so fitted to have stood the test of
time or the owner was unlike my old man, a gentle footed driver.
thanks harry, long retired.
