Retired Old ■■■■:
There’s a name from the past- ■■■■ Hampton. I suspect it was some sort of made-up title? And what happened to them?
■■■■ Hampton was the man who ran a very successful muck shifting company in the 60’s & 70’s. I never met him but did see him in a site I was on. He retired and sold the business to Costain.
■■■■ Hampton’s was sold to Cementation in 1972
That’s solved the mystery for me. Thanks for that. Brings back memories of Johnny Walker Transport from Cheltenham. It was rumoured that there was no such person but that the owner of the firm liked a wee dram sometimes!
■■■■ Hampton, that name always tickled me as a youngster when I saw their lorries. Reminds me of that old chestnut;
Lost driver to man walking on the pavement ; “Excuse me mate, Hampton Court?” Pedestrian ; “Nah mate, I always walk like this!”
Here we are “longdrag” as promised in my PM to you. I think they were sent to me on Facebook but most were taken by local photographer Jack Harrison. Regards Haddy Gt. Yarmouth.
LeeJ:
thelongdrag - is that a Bewick artic heading the other way? red/white cab? it could be.
I do not think Dennis bought his first artic until 1970/1 , - a Leyland Mastiff .
No doubt the man in question will put us all right .
It certainly looks very quiet on the M 6 for a Bank Holiday period.
Am I correct in believing that the M 6 as shown , ( May 1968 ), was then only 2 lanes in each direction ?
Cheers , cattle wagon man.
I thought it was red and yellow ,could be one of Henry Longs

Hello lads, had a scout around in the old box for something…not much so heres some old covers again
Cheers Bubbs,
For the “Gloucestershire Lads”, that’s Len Criddle’s grey ERF tipper in BRS colours.
Hi ROF I sussed that it was a “Merrin End” motor but didn’t know owt else , where was the picture taken? if twas Mitcheldean would ave bin “The Lamb” not the White Oss!
Hi, Dennis. As far as I can recall, ours (Forest of Dean ) was the only branch in our area to run tippers. They were acquired when the Red & Rust bought two hauliers in the locality who were long time bulk tipper operators. Ours were used mostly on coal & coke from South Wales eastwards, returning usually with scrap metal to Wales, although we did take on quite a large amount of grain from the South East to Cardiff docks in season.
Ow do, LD. Not the Mitcheldean White Oss as far as I can see- the building just behind the tipper on the same side as the pub doesn’t seem to belong in that particular location. Had it been The Lamb, there would have been a “deputation” in sight, having been despatched to drag Len out of the bar!
interesting thread this one, I too as a young lad kept a scrapbook of lorries but just the pictures no captions but I arranged them by the different manufactures so I hope the following pictures will be of interest, starting with A.E.C. and Albion. cheers prattman.

fortunately I was on nights and collected the motor always filled up and oil
and water checked so only had cause to fill up when doing the odd shift or
so during the hours of daylight.
