Hi Buzzer, I bought a copy of this photo, but I have a photo of this lorry that I took in Morgan’s yard, it was driven by Tom Brown who, like me spent most of his school holidays during early 70’s with a Morgan driver. My identical twin uncles drove for Morgan’s, which caused some strange looks from unsuspecting people, when seen separately driving different lorries. Sturminster market was a hive of activity in the 70’s, crammed full with lorries such as Morgan’s, A.E. George, N.B Tite, A.E. Stuart, J.T. Heritage, Harraway’s, Dudridge’s etc. I remember a 1966 Deutz artic of Tite’s which used to pull a Doughty twin axle stepframe trailer, I think it was ex Entress transport of Swansea, HWN 573D, can anyone confirm this, or does anyone have photo’s, market scenes etc. Great thread, fantastic memories.
Hi Richard, I spent my childhood riding around with Harraway’s, and what memories they are! Don’t suppose you got any photos of them?
Bewick:
Back in the very late 60’s there was a tipper firm from Carnforth,G.E. Moore, who ran a Dennis tipper with a self tracking single wheel axle in front of the drive axle,it was an Italian design called a Cesci.I know one of the drivers of this machine and while the idea was fine for increasing the payload of a hitherto 16ton gross motor to one able to run at 20 ton GVW it was a nightmare to reverse as a locking pin had to be dropped in manually to lock the axle prior to reversing.Apparently this task could be fairly difficult at times, but the idea has been much refined in later years by the vehicle manufacturers.Cheers Bewick.

Hello Buzzer, I forgot to list H.H. Williams from Gloucester. No I have’nt got photos of Harraway’s but my brother might have some. I’ll find out when I see him. Nice to hear from someone else who is into the livestock scene, Are Harraway’s still going?
Great Pic
PENGCO demount system, they were taken over by Crane Fruehauf
We had this system at Quinton Hazel Automotive Ltd at Warton, as it allowed you to drop the body to the floor as the legs were hydraulic and not swing out type.

Hello Richard and Buzzer
I well remember the names you’ve listed too, brings back a lot of good memories. Do either of you possibly have any photographs which might include some of A.F.Cook lorries? I spent many happy days riding with his drivers when I was a boy & I bitterly regret not taking the camera with me. I guess I was too busy thinking it was all going to last for ever. Sadly most of the Cattle market sites I used to go to are now houses or shops.
Even the gate we used to run Barreners through to load them on the train at Chippenham market has gone now, I was there a couple of weeks ago and that last bit of remaining land is now being developed. All that history gone
Yes, Harraways are still going or at least they were a few weeks back. I do see their unit pulling a tautliner more often than the double deck cattle trailer these days though. I can remember back in the mid 60s at Chippenham market when Graham Harraway was there with a Semi Automatic Leyland unit (can’t remember if this was a demonstrator) which attracted a lot of attention & later when he was there with a brand new Scania 110 unit in thier own colours with a sleeper cab on it. The fact it had a bed in it was a strong talking point with everyone stood looking at it.
Lovely photo Bubbs, Thanks for posting it. I thought I’d seen about every catttle wagon on our patch in those days but that’s one that slipped the net mate.
We (B J Myers Transport Ltd) had four of the very first, TMD 286-7-8-9Y, these went into service on 01.05.1983, the first day of the 38 tonne new law - theres a picture of one of them somewhere on here.
They were a total pain and constant trouble, we part-exed them for new DAF 3300 twinsteers the following year as we couldnt keep them on the road, nor could Volvo.
Its true to say they were badged F1217 as the new model designation F1224, as far as I recall, didnt have the badges made to go with it.

Hi BB, I cant remember A F Cook, where were they from and what lorries did they have? My main haunts were Shaftesbury, Sturminster, Yeovil, Salisbury markets so I may have been out of yor area. Cheers for reply
They were from Frampton Cotterell and ran mainly AECs and Commers with the last new lorry he bought being a K reg Bedford TK complete with a new body, this was shortly before the firm was sold. All were 4 wheelers and were a nice blue in colour. They always had Drew Brothers Containers on them which was handy because the bodies were built about a mile from Sonny Cooks yard.
You would be a bit south of their patch, they mainly served Markets at Chippenham, Gloucester, Thornbury & Yate. With regular attendance at Wilton & Honeybourne sheep fairs plus Hereford Bull Sales whenever they were held. Sonny Cooks driver Reg Anstey was so well known throughout the cattle haulage business, he’d always gain work from buyers ending up with a load of bulls from there which we used to bring back to the yard, unload into a shed and split amnog the fleet to deliver all over the south west the following day. It was brilliant & I wouldn’t exchange the memory of it for anything.

Hiya lads, the last cuttings didnt seem to create any interest,l think everybodys getting slightly bored with them…anyway l’m having a good time.M.A.Ns today
The last pic is for Postman Paul,I should’ve put this on a few weeks ago.
Cheers Marc.
Hi Marc ,I cant thank you enough for the pic of the welsh aggregates 8 legger .It was taken it the quarry just after my Dad picked it up from Gresford Garage near Wrexham .It is a 30.232 Reg number DMB670S . But as it was going in the August issue of Commercial motor if you look close the s was swapped for a t ,As the new reg was out a month later.
Thanks again .
This M.A.N was run by Russell Davies Diss depot, Russell Davies bought out Cartco of Diss, who were mainly a bulk haulage company, but they also had a very lucrative contract with a local newspaper printers in Diss, (this picture was taken outside the printers, ready to load, the driver was an old fella called Charlie, a right company man, didnt matter what company he worked for!) this M.A.N and all the other rigids and artics were mainly kept busy with the 24hour print operation, doing anything from 1 to 15 (on the rigids) deliveries a time. They also (under R.D not Cartco) had another contract with Tilda Rice from Rainham, also keeping us very busy.
I got a job at Cartco driving a 7.5tonner going all over the UK, day cab Iveco, 4-5 nights out a week, then RD put me thru my class1 and i got this brand new FL6 (1 of 3)
a year later, and RD took over the contract at McGregor Cory at Stanton Suffolk, thats where my 2nd brand new lorry came from, RD had a load of artics and rigids in their colours (ive lost my pictures taken in daylight )

Hi Richard, yes Harraways are still going and I go and see the oldest son (Royston) quite often. My favourite lorry they had was a brand new B Series with a factory fitted sleeper and a Gardner 240 engine. You could hear that coming a mile away from Chippenham market!. I am currently restoring the exact same lorry which took me 5 years to find with the same engine/gearbox ect. It was turned into a wrecker but we have now turned it back into a tractor unit and it should be going for test in a few weeks. The Harraway family have agreed we can finish it in their colours and hopefully it will be on the show scene this year. Will post some photos of the last two years work soon.
Regards
Daryl.
