My Dad,Uncle and Cousin all worked full time for them and i was a trailer boy during the school holidays and weekends.
I hope you have more Photos they bring back so many happy memories.

John
Those Bedfords are all export models, I bet more than half of them are still running around somewhere in the world too

Hi lads,heres todays offering,Cheers Bubbs,
The Dempsey rig, would that have been owned by Mickey Dempseys dad?
I delivered tyres to that Dunstable plant when they were making the TK. I picked up a loaded BRS trailer from Fort Dunlop.Full load of tyres ,roped & sheeted on a flat! Around Watford Gap I looked in the mirror & saw truck tyres rolling down the road. Some went central reservation some went into the ditch & away.I re-sheeted the back & chucked a couple in the cab. I unloaded in Bedfords & they didn’t count them & gave me a clear sig.I gave them the ones in the cab( heavy security on the Exit gate) but at least 6 went missing.

Good photo of the ‘A’ series cab, I had this one at Harold Woods it was a cracking truck, the only fault really was a ■■■■■■■ motor and a David Brown straight six 'box, bit of a mis-match I thought.
My dad worked for Woodys in the early `70s at Heckmondwike he was there around 12 months and drove some rubbish then he got a brand new A series and left .Before that he was at Henry Longs and had a mkv mm8 with the 9.6 and 5 speed box pulling a drawbar trailer had that for 10 years (38mph max) then he got a brand new Atki and … left !!!

Hi I feel so sad when I see the Bedford production facilities.
I cannot help but think they stopped production and closed the UK Bedford operation because they were sick of how our government of the day dealt with the proposed takeover of Leyland including Landover.
Had the government encouraged the deal at the time I cannot help but think that we would have had a strong UK HGV manufacturing base today.
Bedford were strong in the light/middleweight range both in this country and overseas and I have no doubt that they would have evolved and designed new models that would still have been at the top of their market.
The TM range never took off but given more time it most probably would have but had this been put in the pot with Leyland and developed as I’m sure they would have, Leyland’s traditional markets could not only have survived but been developed.
As for Land Rover, only now after the takeover by Tata are they reaching potential. With Bedford RL they would have a common stable mate, and who knows how GM would have developed the non-commercial side including Range Rover.
As it happened firstly been taken over by BMW then Ford I cannot help think they were raped twice and 4 wheel drive technology taken to help those two manufacturers develop their 4 wheel drive variants.
All in all I think it all turned out as a bad move for UK

Hello Harry, I believe that the father of the Dempsey brothers Mick and John did have a transport company in the Manchester area in the seventies. If you remember both brothers drove for a Swiss firm and I.I.R.C. John did drive a wagon and drag.
Also wasn’t there two major truck manufacturers in Dunstable in the early seventies Bedford and Dodge , we sometimes delivered the foam for the seats that were assembled at the plant along with the roof linings and the rubber mats. All handball, with the driver having to put the stuff into cages whenever the forky would find the time to bring you an empty cage. It took six hours or longer to empty a 28ft trailer which for them was about the normal time
.
hiya,
It’s a long time since I was anywhere near the Bedford plant picking up
cased spares for export, is it still in existence or now covered over with
a housing estate ■■, it was a shame to see it go the way it did, there is a
market for TK type vehicles they made great removal vans/pantechnicans
and now with the small curtain sided motors on the go could have held
their own in the local collection and delivery operations and of course
the military vehicle’s market always there, I never rated their attempt
at producing " big stuff " but their small and medium range was spot on.
thanks harry, long retired.
about bedford,s cheers bma
Hiya,
I’ve got a small collection of photos and scanned magazine clippings. The photos were mostly taken between 1991 and 1993 except one or two which are fairly recent. I took them all when I was an adolescent and truck mad.
I hope these are ok. I’ll post a few here and there until I’ve posted my collection.
This first one was a truck I snapped as I was in the passenger seat of my dad’s Cargo (about 1991ish). I really liked the look of it so I decided to take a picture.
I took this when a fair was in town. What struck me is that this Cargo was only a few years old when I took this photo which is relatively unusual for a fair.
I took this picture only about 3 years ago in the yard for a company I worked for at the time. The owner restored it, it was originally registered to Wrefords too.
This is scanned from Trucking International, April 1996
ezydriver do you know if the driver was named hughes from saltney ?
