Definately not an April Fool Dave, they came through a few times! Normally it was Foden Twin Loads that they used so I can only assume that these were emergency deliveries as they were hardly designed for a 200+ miles round trip.
Pete.
Foden Twin Loads, now there was an idea before its time. Not in the UK of course (unless Denby have their way) but they were the basis for the idea of B-double/triple trains. A 5th wheel and semi trailer behind a load platform. Only difference was they used an 8 legger for the prime mover instead of another semi.
hiya,
Didn’t Blamires of Preston get pulled back in the mid 60s for operating 8 wheelers pulling a dolly
then a semi-trailer they was sending them to Glasgow on night trunk, and didn’t the offence
bring about their demise ■■.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry, theres a shot on the Crow’s Gateshead thread of an eight wheeler with a dolly, this motor regularly did London trunk in the early seventies, its regular 33’ trailer was quite often swapped for a 40’. Ralph might be able to tell you how his uncle John got away with it. It ran double manned, the two drivers were Angus Parker and John Hook. regards Kev. Ps It was like an ocean liner the way it was lit up.

hiya,
Kev lived in the Northeast in the early 70s but never came across that one would have been so
nice to see especially with a 40 footer some motor eh’ bet it was a sod to push back with a dolly
in the middle been easier with a fifth wheel on the arse end of the legger and quite a bit lighter,
wonder what Crows grossed it out at ■■.

Great shot there “adr” of the two Brady Beavers and what looks like a Leyland tilt cab on a test run.The place is the Mayfield cafe on the A6 at Garstang and the Brady tankers would have been on their way to the ICI plant at Hillhouse,Blackpool to load Acid for BCL at Barrow. The Brady drivers would possibly have been Albert Coward ( who I think could be the driver chatting to the Leyland driver) and maybe Nobby Clark was the other driver. The Brady acid tanks ran on double shift and it was the best job on the firm at the time !!! Cheers Bewick.

Aye,a great photo. ICI Hillhouse is another blast from the past,is there owt left of it? I used to go in quite regularly in the 70s with benzene and unleaded paraffin.

I got stopped in Sheffield City Centre one night by a young copper, with a bemused sergeant looking on ,accusing me of pulling two trailers, the dolly counting as a trailer. This was 1100-pm one friday night,in 1981.He took all the details, even though I told him Glass Glover had been running drawbars with dolly converters for years. Never heard anything about it,although there was a company that contested a prosecution in court and they got away with it,maybe the company from Preston.

IIRC Chris didn’t HB & H from Newton-le-Willows run some LAD Octopus’s pulling a “dolly” drawbar trailer on the bottle job out of St. Helens and IIRC got into lumber with the “Powers that be” about the “two” trailer thingy.I seem to remember it dragged on for a bit in the early 70’s Cheers Dennis.
I’m not sure if H B and H were involved Dennis but I remember them running with dolly converters - I have a photo of one of their LAD Octopuses with a trailer somewhere.
As an aside from this dolly + semi making 2 trailers debate, back in those days I let off steam at the weekends racing bangers (saloon stock cars we called them) at Long Eaton and elsewhere. We also ran foul of keen coppers who stopped us many times because we pulled the cars to the track with the front axles mounted on ambulance wheels. Yes, you guessed it - 2 trailers.
My scrapbook memories don’t go back as far as some on here but I have scanned in some photos of trucks. Some my dad drove and some that delivered into his firms yard.
