Scania seat problem

jessicas dad:
when i drive a scania r series my head hurts like hell cos the only thing that stops them being the worse truck on the road is a stralis. :open_mouth:

err i think that Steyr-Daimler-Puch trucks were worst, maybe not

I’d heard similar complaints about 10 years ago when the 4 series was new. A lot of drivers were complaining of back pains back then as well. I’m sure there was a theory that the trucks were initially designed and developed for the left hand drive market. This resulted in the pedals being slightly off-set on RHD models leaving your back at a slight angle.

It might be a load of rubbish, I don’t know ?

I’d driven quite a few 2, 3 & 4 Series over the years from the horrible ā€˜P day cab’ to the 164 and being honest never had much of a problem myself.

It could be a lot of tosh as you say, but Scania never even mastered the gearbox configuration in a right hand drive 111 /141 either as there excuse was it was built for the left hand market.

scania.com.au/

Not sure if they have mastered it yet but the website suggests they are pushing hard down under

I doubt that too, the Steyr had a decent sized cab, a little weird looking maybe, but so is Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I would argue that the Ford Cargo in its many forms was the worst truck range ever built, in fact I would go as far to say that even most successful long haul motor from Ford was only successful because it used spare parts from all the other manufacturers.

Hi all
I have been driving a 59 reg Scania R440 for the last two days and now my lower back hurts like hell
Has anyone else had this problem?

looks like your back is the problem, not the scania seat

always get problems with my back after driving a scania for a while. since the 3 series, they have gone down hill fast, and i don’t mean on the road!

You should try 9 hours per night,5 nights per week, driving a Merc 2534.But I always found the old 1970’s Bostrom seats were much more comfortable than later stuff fitted with Isringhausen ones.

Back in a scania now after 6 months on a doodle bug (Axor),the merc killed my back but now Im in a Scania again all is good, never had a prob with any scania seats and Im 6ft 4.

can’t comment on the seat in an R cab (top/hiliner) but the P cabs are dire. Had a 4 series rigid which was a 94d (think thats for disribution) after my old 93m n the 3 series was more contoured and a bit bigger all round…the 4 series was flat, hard and seemed rather small on the bottom bit…didn’t reach the back of the knees so the legs did most of the supporting work which resulted in back ache after half an hour.It seemed like i was in the ā€˜nearly seated’ position all the bloody time!! Oh,and if u slid the seat cushion forward to compensate for this u were sat right on the back of the seats frame. This resulted in many visits to the chiropractor or ostiothingymebob, along with most of our drivers. This offset driving position has (so say specialists) left me with a twisted pelvis and suffering from Sciatica which on a good day is a constant throbbing in the bottom r/h/s of my spine or on a bad day,on the floor in excrutiating pain which can take up to 2 wks to ā€˜pop back in’. I heard a rumour years ago that the seats were the reason Tesco changed to Mercs and i think a lawsuit followed and i know that after all the complaints from us,we were shown (by a Scania man) how to use the lumber support etc and to sign a declaration saying that we had been trained ie, back problem was our problem n not the company’s. When yr sat on the sofa at home or in the car, does it feel like 1 cheek is not quite in full contact with the seat?? That’ll be the Scania Syndrome!!

Edit…i’m 6’1 and 15 and a half stone if that helps!!

I drive a 09 plate p cab and its awful. I’m 5’11 and just under 16st. I can’t get the seat far enough back as it hits the back of the cab and the trying to get the wheel in the correct position is a joke. The seat also has very little side support so I find my back slides from side to side. This was a replacement to my old 53 plate 114 and although the cab was still to small, the seat was far more comforatble and at least the height and angle of the steering wheel could be adjusted seperately. I, like others that I know, have had several episodes of back pain since getting this newer truck.

I drove a 4series left ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  on a previous job with no probs, been on a right hand drive same spec for last 3 days, my lower back was killing me.

i think its more to do with the trucks being designed as a lhd.

i find a lhd xf comfier to drive than a right ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– .

bunch of ■■■■■’s… :unamused:

Arm rests are optional extra from factory on auto’s.

they should be standard on all autos otherwise you just end up having a gimp arm and nothing to rest it on

Should they not be standard on anything that costs about 70k

Monday I drove a 52 plate P cab (I think their called) and didnt have any back problems, nor did I have any problems when I drove a P cab R series one yesterday…
The only problem I did have was being seen driving a Scania

no, it could have been a lot worse you could have been driving a dodge…and that’s another story.

WOT   How dare u slate the good old Dodge…first wagon i drove when i passed me test in the early '80’s…thats all the company had in the fleet in them days…100’s of the buggers…no radios,no power steering, fixed seat…nice motor  I could share a couple of stories about them  Didn’t they then go to Reno after a while?? Got air suspended seat,p/a/s and a radio then!! I remember a Cargo (well 2 actually) that were at the old Banbury depot, late '93…both 18 tonners, one had a V8 Perkins/8 speed splitter box, only got going once it was in about 7th n had to stop for breath once you’d got to Gordano services on way to Plymouth n Telegraph Hill?? Needed a medic! But the other had a V10 ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  6 box…went like that stuff of a stick!! That would sit at 80 all day long but i didn’t do that at 3 in the morning on an empty M5 cuz i was a good boy…honest i was
