That would explain your problem as I thought Scania stopped producing a 4 over 4 box about 10 years ago.
our g-cabs are 4 over 4[no spitter though],the earliest ones in yard are now 600k ish, never had any issues with gearboxes up to now.and there fleet motors, run 24/7 with any tom, ■■■■ or harry driving so they do lead a hard life
I have had the same problem, but for me it was that I was trying to change gear to quickly! Knock it in to neutral for a second then select the gear, it worked for me anyway.
They used to have a sticker on the drivers door telling you to leave them in high range, well the M reg 113 I had did, I got a P reg 4 series after that and it never had the sticker
Mine doesn’t like going from 5th to 4th either. I used to have a tendency to try and do it too quickly for the gearbox, but I got used to having to wait (an age) for the ‘clunk’ of the range changer before trying to get into 4th. Take it slow and see how it behaves. If it keeps doing it even when you’re doing it slowly, then there’s probably something worth defecting (or just wait until it breaks as our fitters keep recommending.)
Sods at Scania told me I couldn’t have a 4 over 4 when i specced my 56 plater so unfortunately went for Opticruise instead, dunno if the sales man was telling me porkies.

it may of been they didnt do one in 56,our g-cabs arrived as 58 regs[2 yr gap], when did they start making g-cabs ,also there fine normally but if you start getting up round full weight they struggle without a splitter,no idea if they used this gearbox in other scanias around 56

Ah, I think maybe you can have a 4 over 4 with no splits on. If you want splits it has to be a 3 over 3.
A quick look at Scania’s website confirms that the option are an 8 speed which you would call a four over four, or a 12 speed which would be known on this post as a three over three with an additional splitter to give six over six.
There are a couple of other options, 9, 13 and 14 speeds but they are the same gearboxes with extra crawler gears.
Not wishing to insult anyone’s intelligence but a crawler gear used to be an extra gear, lower than first and for getting you out of the mire, such as a very steep hill start.
Not many modern gearboxes feature such a thing as most modern engines are powerful enough to get going in first.
