hi,
my name is phil and i passed my lgv class c in december, would just like to say this site is pretty informative for me.
untill october 2010 i was a security manager looking after the london underground test track near melton in leicestershire.
i moved from nottingham to west bromwich and decided to come out of security and try to tackle hgv driving, passed my test and now really trying get a job driving but like most i haven’t got the 2 yr experience so i am trying get a 7.5ton driving job just so i can gain the experience i need.
i like some others on here have been finding it hard to get driving work even though i have inundated companys with my cv etc.
well thats about it from me apart from thank you for having me here and i hope to gain many friends from this site and a lot of information.
Welcome to the site, most places and adgecys around my way want 2 years experience to. Best printing off your cv and cover letter and visiting company’s face to face. You will get your break in time. Best of luck
Welcome to the site mate.
In my opinion (as a driver turned gaffer) you’ll have much more success getting a job by knocking on doors and visiting in person.
We get about 10-15 c/vs sent in a month, they get filed until such time we’re recruiting.
But we have taken lads on when there was no vacancy, because they’ve called in, had the right attitude and ticked all the boxes.
As I’ve put on another thread here, I’ve also started out same as everyone else. At one place, I visited them 5 times, four times told no, 5th time asked ‘can you start tomorrow’.
As a new start, expect to get all the crap jobs, awkward loads, and little reward for it. One place I worked made a point of giving you a couple of weeks of crap as an ‘attitude test’, to see if you’d stay or jack when the going got tough.
It is much easier getting a job if you’ve already got one, so take any work you can get (van, 7.5 ton, rigid, whatever) and work from there. If you do get a start, talk to other drivers from other companies whilst you’re out and about, jobs are not often advertised these days so word of mouth is key. But don’t start telling other drivers about the time you were in the SAS or spouting bollox about anything else, don’t slag your company off or whinge about the customer. Anyone on here will testify, there are good, sound, easy and well paying jobs around, but don’t expect to walk straight into one, you start at the bottom and work your way up. When you do find a better job (and you will), don’t burn your bridges with your gaffer, work your notice and leave on good terms, you never know when you may be back there!
Hi.
Thanks for your replys & all the good advice. Not expecting to get a job straight away but just by gaining my class c is a big achievement to me.
I am going get my backside in gear starting monday & get around some companys starting birmingham & working in a 30mile radius.even if I get to fill a application in while in there office atleast that means I got off my bum & went out looking & that they get to see my face instead of a piece of paper. .
Go and see a guy called Jim at Jobsworth agency on the Dudley Rd in Halesowen - Sell yourself in person rather than phoning and he may give you a break
If your thinking of doing your C+E some time, it would be an idea to do it ASAP as you will get the same 2 year experience thing as you are getting now, which you won’t want to hear a 2nd time round

he will give you a break, but be prepared for the ■■■■■■ jobs first, and watch out if you get sent to spar its mainly class 2 but it can be a ball ache with the handball
