Since John’s Saviem) passing I must admit to feeling a bit flat every time I come on TNUK at the moment. His contributions were always eagerly anticipated and brought interest and deep knowledge. It reminds me of the passing of a favourite uncle.
Nice one Michel, cheers!
Proper solution as well, that fold away boom section
Now, would this be of 1950’s vintage?
Cheers, Patrick
Thanks for sharing Buzzer, that first sentence says it all, being all humble and not lacking a proper sense of humour…
And I do understand what you mean gingerfold, although it feels as if me grandad passed away instead of me favourite uncle…
Been going through this thread the past weekend and somewhere right at the beginning John mentioned that his mum suffered a stroke, and his then ungoing battle with the doctors… and it wasn’t his first battle with those lot, since his daughter was involved in a accident and the so called doctors didn’t gave a penny for her life…
But my word, did he knew a lot about the industry!
Sure do mis the man…
Patrick
Thank you Buzzer for sharing the PM. John certainly got around. No wonder he had so much information to draw on. However, being able to remember it was equally if not more impressive.

Think we all feel the same, posting the photos feels different for me, at the moment, knowing John won’t be around to get us the finite details, but I’m also sure that John would have liked us all keep it going, which I know a lot of us will, and, we have Michel as our French connection for the info on the wagons…bon courage mes amis…
Nice one Buzzer, what a great read about a true gent.
Hi Buzzer, Thanks for sharing…
pv83:
A quick search brought me back to this fine forum…,apparently the pic’s were posted before on a Bowker thread and the scrapbook memories thread… (terribly sorry if I’d offended you by using your pic’s Gardner 240)
Cheers, Patrick
I expect I’ll forgive you… eventually
114 was the first one, and that’s a Volvo publicity photo, taken in the yard at Bamber Bridge in August 1989.
118 was the last one to be sold, but this photo shows it in its original condition at the 1989 Scottish Commercial Show.
Here it is nearer the end of its life:

Axles…lots of them in different configurations, so, it has to be Italy…

Evening gentlemen as Saviem often said in his openings in his postings on here, as I have already said before I never got to meet John but like many on this thread you felt like you had known him all his life. His contributions on TNUK from his vast knowledge within the transport Industry world shared with us all and don’t we just miss his input.
Now I have thought hard about weather to share the following item with all the followers of this thread and have decide that I would, back in January 2013 I sent a PM to John asking for a brief resume of his career as I found his posts of great interest and always with the detail from his evergreen memory and in his pleasurable manner back came the reply.
Now some of you will have known him personally and met him but I was not one of those lucky ones and that’s my reason for asking this of him, hope this does not offend anyone but I am confident that under the circumstances John aka Saviem would not have minded, Buzzer
What a lovely honest man he was…
Thanks Buzzer for sharing, it was good to see and read…
Regards
If I was a wealthy man, like a few on here, I’d track this down and restore it…but I’m not, so it ain’t gonna happen…

They don’t count, they’re not proper lorries they’re called trucks…

Patrick…some heavies, how it use to be done…
Blimey it looks like one of the elusive WW2 German Sonder tank transporter trailers which I’d asked Saviem about previously has turned up in that photo.
When I did convoi work I usually had something like in the first pic, a Renault 4 out in front, sometimes worse, a Ford ■■■■■■…now look what their using…sod driving the wagon, I’ll do the escorting…
Cheers Fergie, absolute wonderful footage mate!
Now about that posh “voiture pilote”, never seen that before, mostly those lads (and sometimes lasses… ) just drive the not so posh Peugeot/Citroën van’s…
But everything’s better than using a dodgy Renault 4 I reckon
