That Scania has a short body and is on little wheels. I’ll bet it was in service as a drawbar outfit with someone like Westermann. I used to drive one like it! Robert

It was indeed used as a drawbar outfit to carry strawbales from Jalognes (Central France) towards cattle breeding areas such as Brittany, Normandy or Charolais. The place being at 5 kms from wher I live, I used to see it regularly passing by my house. It was replaced by a purple DAF XF 95 6 x2 coupled to a 3-axle trailor.

Sorry, first friends over, then family…the joy of living in France…so I’ve been busy…It’s drizzling at the moment, so got some time to post…

Still getting to grips with the double posts, I may have posted some before, but, hey ho…let’s start with some heavies and Pacifics…

Old picture for the week…

Gotta go, Mrs F has just come back, and I haven’t hoovered up yet…not that I’m afraid of her…

Good evening as do a lot of us, I always look forward to reading this particular thread as the knowledge and information is incredible from everybody. So here are a few photos from my uncles collection of firstly a Mack and then a Mercedes Titan whilst he was working in Saudi. And lastly one of the FTF he drove in the uk all under the Mammoet banner hope these are of interest.

You’ve got me worried for a bit there mate… being of a certain age and not react for some time, one might suspect the worst :unamused:
But nice come-back with those heavies though :exclamation:

Now, I’ve been to Toulon (La Crau to be specific) and went back up north via Beziers with a backload.

Cheers, Patrick

Spotted these along the way…

That old Renault draw bar unit just pulled out when I came in, looked like it was still being used on a daily basis…

The old Unic/Magirus/Iveco workshop is situated just north of Montelimar, doesn’t look like it’s still in service though… but there’s a abandoned Unic on the premises…

Spotted the old Renault van south of Bourg en Bresse.

And the last one is a monument for the fallen soldiers of the Great War, always a impressive moment if I drive past it…
It’s situated on the D977 just north of Suippes

Still plodding on mate, however, a week with the grandchildren nearly finished me off prematurely…Nice photos Patrick…and you’ve a keen eye for the oldies too…like to see where you’ve been and what your hauling, and the pics of the unusual on the way…keep them coming young man…

Whoops, double posted…

Some great pics been posted on here. The beauty of these old motors is that they have so much character about
them unlike all the modern crap of today. Look at the split windscreen on this Willeme.

One week? I have just had 3 weeks with 4 of the little darlings…

My wife and I are knackered.

But the best lights on this planet are the tail lights of the grandkids heading home"…

Evening Gentlemen,

What superb posts you have made! Thank you all, it makes great reading.

jshepugius, thank you and welcome. Patrick, superb “today” job images. Your trailer is interesting, does that middle axle lift, or steer, or both? It looks awkward, bet its a bugger to reverse on a high camber road? Does it extend as well, and what payload, 40/50 tonne, with a nett of 25/26 tonne?Froggy, those old French lorries are superb, and you are right, so many “contemporary” lorries have gone off to Africa for a new life. That Scania is not ex Giraud Groupe, nor Robert is she Westermann, (was the late Tom Annabel in charge when you drove for them? A real tragerdy his death, what came after was a shadow of what he created, and a lot of great potential was lost).

Fergie, you may have been away with family commitments, but when you come back, wow, what a selection! My friends in Nice the Martin family, one of their original “Interflora” Berliets with their “flanc blancs” whitewalls…ended up as a major Volvo user, ran so many of those , (Orrible), Eurotrotter F10s, as 33 pallet combinations…but also quite a few of our J serie Saviems…ideal for deliveries around Monaco! I should write about them more…

The Tractomas and dog…there is a great story to that shot…

Pacifics…oh boy, where should I start? and those time expired lorries…bit like me I suppose…my Eastern European, (beautiful), Doctor tells me that 2 cuts of sileage, laying a new concrete yard, and re-roofing my steel barn, (wherin lives my Star and assorted other bits of vehicle related rubbish)…was not a great idea, particularly when you factor in a harvest of Barley…hence my post tonight from the seclusion of my bedroom…

So when the DVLA forms to renew my HGV licence were received on Saturday…well I thought, enough is enough…£100 for the quack…£50 for Specsavers…plus the nervous anticipation…Simply, simply not worth the effort…

Then last night my pal in Nice telephoned me to say he had found a really tidy F89 4x2 down in the Var , very little rust…oh dear…

So tommorrow its calls to the Doctor…Specsavers…and Easy Jet…and try and think up some plausable excuse for my good lady…“would you like a few days in the South of France…you know that my” , (oh gorgeous)," Doctor says I need relaxation, and rest"…

Well its worth a try is it not…

Has there ever been a more enjoyable lorry to drive than M Volvo`s F89?..

Fair bucked me up has that thought!

Cheerio for now

DEANB very kindly posted this on the ERF European 1975 thread. Has anyone on here any idea of the French company? I have a suspicion that this is the Pacific which received a replacement ERF cab when it was operated by the French heavy hauliers, Loste. Cheers, Robert

Just finished reading my latest “Heritage Commercials” ( about 6 weeks behind UK ) there was part 2 of French emergency vehicles and 2 pages of Berleit photographs …I,m guessing that this news will be old hat ■■? however I would like to agree with Monsieur Le Saviem that the Volvo F89 was a very enjoyable lorry to drive … I was never quite the same after 12 months of trouble free driving in Saudi aboard my 6x4 F89 with SARAMAT …Middle East spec with all the box & dice …attached picture of same …Ah them was the days ■■? …now retiring for dinner including creamed Desiree potatoes !!!
