What a sad day for France…R.I.P. to those innocents that were murdered in Nice…

Dave,
Yes such a sad day thinking of you all in France,as well as the happy and many peaceful Bastille days Angie and I have spent in France when all trucks were not allowed to drive on that day,in places such as Macon,Lyon, the top of Mont Cenis etc.The world is changing, not for the better I’m afraid.

Kind regards
Richard

The first night of The Proms has just opened on BBC with the Marseillaise in tribute to the fallen in Nice. Robert

Great to see that our insular neighbours still feel concerned by what’s happening on the Continent. Thanks for your comfort!

I will join with you Dave in your sentiments, absolutely atrocious and heart breaking, deepest condolences to all those families affected. I trust you can imagine my verbal reaction to the news flash we had last night here in the UK ! Regards Dennis.

My reaction was undoubtedly the same as yours Den, and every other decent persons as well…

How things have changed Richard from our early days coming over to Europe, alas, not all for the better…at least we had the best times which we can look back on with fond memories, I wouldn’t have missed it…

Thank to everyone else who commented, I know this is a truck site, and shouldn’t really post up general topics, but, just felt the need to post this tragic event…viva la France …

Most interesting pictures! Despite its UK registration, the first one (Cobra Ford) looks Italian to me.

You are quite right. Without looking it up my memory is not good any more) the first one was used (I think commissioned) by American Lance Reventlow to haul his Scarab racing cars (that his team built) in Europe, then it was moved on and was used by Alan Mann racing and Carroll Shelby to move his Cobras (thus the sign writing), all back in the late 50s and the 60s…

Hi Dipster,

You are right it was owned by Reventlow,of Woolworths fame, who had it from the original owners Maserati, and then the others you mention,as well as being respayed to appear in the film “Le Mans” as a Ferrari transporter, also JCB owned it and I believe they put a Bedford Coach turbo diesel engine in it ,which it still has,it has a bit more oomph then the original Fiat lump.
I was at the Goodwood revival meeting last September and Bonhams auctioned it whilst there,it sold for a staggering £656,700 !! I went up to £650,000 but was outbid at the last moment as my wife restrained me :unamused: :unamused:

Dear oh dear, that’s just the kind of sarcastic comment that persuaded 18 million of us Brits to vote to leave the rotten corrupt edifice that is the EU ! We are quite happy to trade with the EU but have absolutely no desire to be swept along and become a part of some sort of Super State ruled from Berlin ably assisted by the French, neither do we want to use the mickey mouse Euro. All the EU wanted the UK for is the net contribution of billions which when we make the final break ( sooner the better) will reduce the EU budget by 15% Great ! Nor do we want anymore Migrants from over the Channel. We will do very well making our own deals with the rest of the World thank you and as for the EU forming it’s own Army, what a joke ! The French will surrender at the sound of the first shot and the Gerrys only fight on a five day week and now have to have every weekend off and start fighting again on Monday morning ! The reasons for the UK leaving are endless but we sure as hell are not now going to treated as an off shore Banana Republic which is what Merkel wanted but they would still take our contribution thank you very much ! “Out voter” Bewick.

Dennis glad to see you are still flying the flag for the out voters and I was one as well, the sooner the exit the better as far as I am concerned.
On another note “Froggy55” I think it wise if some one offers you sympathy on a tragedy except it graciously from whom it and where ever they were from, do not sneer at them as I suspect they were very genuine with there concern, Buzzer.

What a sad day for France…R.I.P. to those innocents that were murdered in Nice…

Evening all,

Fergie, (Dave), thank you for posting that, a true setiment.

For me “Les promenade des Anglais”, had a special meaning for me…

From hosting “foreign” journalists, like my friend of many years Pat Kennett, to those of European Magazines, french, Dutch, German, Italian, Swedish,…the good natured banter, the fun, and enjoyment of not being PC…(surely the death of integration )…and with knowledge laughing at the mistakes of our national manufacturers…while sitting enjoying a glass or two of great French wine in that so balmy evening atmosphere…surely the best in the world…putting the World to rights …as individuals…all guards down…

I worked out my own “test route” for different lorries, using the big hills behind Nice as a trial circuit…then down to that balmy promenade…boy , how I loved it…the bars…the resteraunts…(where even a chrome and gold Le Centaure was a bigger draw than a passing Ferrari)…

I heard the news with horror…(I have friends in Nice, and my Daughters Godfather in Lorgues),…was it a terrorist?..or some lost. luney, with a grudge…the following day I listened all day to French stations whil`st working away on the farm…

My conclusion…from the inept pronouncements of Frances , (poor quality), Prime Minister…to the purely Racist, and thick pronouncements of Marine…No one really knows from whence, or for what reason this dispicatable act came…but in one fell sweep, (and a tragic one at that), it has some success…

We truly are as one…we condem it…we abhour it…we dislike it…

Dennis, (Bewick), the one thing that both binds us, and seperates us from our French friends is that we are alike!

We both have national pride,
We both have held an Empire…(but the French have…for whatever reason held onto theirs)!
We both love our country…

France is in a state of Emergency…(and if anyone thinks that our Police Force can be viscious…well think again…because France has both Para Military, and Civil Police)…and to be held by the former…well…you really would have little to help you!

Froggie…our vote to leave the “political mashed potato” of the European Union, was not insular…we are of you…but we are the only unwritten constitution in the proposed Euro State…the Treaty of Lisbon was simply a "re write,of Giscar D`Estangs blueprint for a European Superstate…and our third rate politicians should have never signed up to it!..but our populous have decided that enough is enough!..we are, and always will be free…free to do our own thing…(grief that is modern for me)…but we are a free people…and our Political class have just found that out!!!

Due to the socialist policies projected by the French Government France is now truly the economic "basket case " of Europe…It simply can not continue…(one of my friends in Lille now pays as much in employment taxes to the State, as wages to each individual employee…his business is foundering…his clients can buy cheaper else where)…and he cannot forsee meeting his “social” obligations…

Perhaps we, here, have, (for whatever its real disadvantages), pursued a better policy of integration of our “ethnic minorities”…(.and believe me we here have our problems)!..But I well remember those blocks of apartments, that ring of multi story concrete, around Marseille, Paris, Nice, Bordeaux, …let alone Brussells, and those horrible areas of that most UK friendly Holland…(and for “afters” try any Swedish City…or much maligned Norway…Oslo has major problems)!..

I grieve for what has happened to La Belle France…

But look what you have stored up…and try to integrate your “Colonial” peoples…many are just as you and I.

But in my worst nightmares when I leant on the side of a gleaming black, red, and chrome TR305, pinging with its exertions over those little Cols behind Nice, and my great, and true friend, (the late Pat Blackburn), said…(“you lucky bugger”) …one balmy night in late 1978 parked alongside the sea on that so atmospheric Promenade des Anglais…never, in my most hideous nightmares could I forsee that crass and despicatable act of July 14 2016…AND I CONDEMM IT WITH ALL MY HEART.

You have to treat people as welcome/equal…sometimes its hard…but with this terrible tradgedy in Nice you see the result of not so doing!

The UK is leaving EU, not leaving Europe  . It is clear that dedicated followers of this thread hold their European neighbours dear, and cherish many happy memories of those allegiances  . Vivre la France, et vivre le resistance! Robert

Very well said Saviem.

Robert, John, and all the other regulars…an emotive subject…thanks for your replies,

However, back to lorries I think, I’m sure none of us want to follow some of the threads with fallings out.

Old lorries , trips in Europe , recalling memories, lots of photos, huge amount of information, thats what we’re good at here, I feel guilty now posting it up in the first place, lesson learnt…let’s keep away from politics eh, …

Evening all,

pv 83, Fergie…I can`t wait…old and new…what a super recipe!

Patrick, have you still got that tri drive Volvo on your fleet?..Loved the SARENS pictures, I remember a really odd heavy haulage DAF 3600 with the cab repositioned low down in front of the steer axle operated by Baelzen from Veldhoven, Wonder what happened to her? Heavy haulage across Europe is a fascinating subject, with some real characters involved in the industry!

Fergie, Dispatcher , totally agree with your comments about heavy haulage…the amazing engineering solutions that quite “normal” outfits could come up with to get the job done, well, were quite amazing… particularly in the 50s through to the 70s, when there was not the over bearing legislation forcing everyone into a “compliant, not innovative” approach to the job!

Thanks for all your time and effort, makes for really interesting reading and looking!

Cheerio for now.

Took me some time, but I’ve finally managed to “dig” into the archives.
Couldn’t find the Baetsen DAF however, but came up with a alternative…

Cheers, Patrick

Can I add this one as well? Visited this one last week, it’s situated in Miramont de Guyenne (47) and absolutely worth a try, used to be another at the end of the village (La Storia) but that seemed to have closed it’s doors for a wee bit longer…
And there’s another one when entering the village (coming from the north, Bergerac), but believe me, you don’t want to set foot in that place…

But it’s been a while since I’ve been to Bretagne, just might pop in somewhere late August…

Apparently I’m going to departement 60 with a pipe layer, wide bugger, so that means night transport through Belgium…
