sat nav dependent

Use the satnav for the last few miles. Use a map for the routes to the town/city you want to be at. Believe me you’ll benefit in the long run particularly if a motorway gets shut for an accident and you’re able to work out an alternative route off the top of your head. I can do alternative routes far faster than “Jane” can work them out for all of the major UK road network.

WOW, you’re the ‘Man’, wish I could, I use TMC to keep me on ‘track’.

Use basic sat nav and cross refrence it against the map sometimes the map knows best and the sat nav talks bolloxs

certanitly dont follow the sat nav blindly otherwise you will be in bother i find for last few miles the sat nav is a god send or gets you near enough .

i would say 50% map 50% sat nav but if you been there before majority of time you no where your going next time and remember the familer surroundings etc if your not reading your road signs your going to end up in bother before much longer

When you are asked to go to Leeds be careful as if you head for Leeds, W Yorks, instead of Leeds, Kent you’ll be about 250 miles away on arrival…

That’s what maps are for…

I aggree, ( as I stated ) Satnav’s are wonderful.

They take a lot of stress out of the day while driving around busy built-up area’s

But do have limitations // The use of POSTCODES to find DESTINATIONS is one of the bigests

( So long as your aware of what they are, Satnav is a wonderful piece of Kit )

MAPS also have limitations, If there out of date, there just Toilet Paper
and if you cault trying to read one when you not PARKED, your get at least 3 extra points on your license
and before anyone jumps off there horse, same applies if they catch you fiddling with your SatNav .

PS: If any TM wants to reproduce my warning about SATNAV’s // POSTCODES
( contained in my 1st post this tread )

And place it on there Drivers Rest Room Wall , I have no issues with copywirte …

PPS And by the way, if you come accross me at a Truckstop/Services/RDC Restroom etc.

Love it,

Unless of course it stats/details Leeds, Kent as the destination.
not that I think Id be tipping down there regular ( Seed or Fert to a Farm maybe )

And yes " New York " is on the B1192 in Lincolnshire ( very close to RAF Coningsby ) :stuck_out_tongue:

load of rubbish
when motorway gets shut cos of accident you can find yourself in an unknown built up area
you will come to roundabouts and junctions with vague or non existant road signs
might as well throw your prepared route out the window
as your sat nav comes into its own now and is your best friend
all you do is click avoid roadblock before you come off the motorway
select find alternative then select avoid roadblock and then select 1 mile and your new route will be calculated in 2 seconds

Which is why I always liked to use postcodes and then view the final destination as a double check.

My dad was in a petrol station in Whitby when a bloke in a artic came in and asked the whereabouts of such an such, after the cashier and my dad who both know the area didn’t know the place, my dad said are you sure it’s not the Whitby by Ellesmere port? It was!!

I have used a sat nav from my very first day driving hgv’s and have learned a lot of routes from using it but sometimes you have to use maps or other drivers directions.

Its been said lots of times on here that its not the sat nav’s fault its the drivers just like bridge strikes. check your route, check your height and if necessary take another route.

It annoys me when I hear people say you cannot learn from using a sat nav yes you can also calling them prat nav’s ect is another thing I don’t agree with its the drivers fault

True…That’s like sleeping in and blaming your watch.
