Sacrifices of Tramping

Harry Monk:
As predicted, it will be a trip to Rungis. Worth doing for the experience.

I’d love to be there to see the reverse on to the bays. I think I’d almost ask for a load just to be there - what could possibly go wrong lol

The irony of a student saying lorry drivers are scruffy is overwhelming me.

He isn’t a student. He is a wind-up merchant. I said that when he first showed up but was told that I was wrong and that he was legit.

Well, that theory was put forward when he posted about a DVSA stop on the M5 but in fairness he did rather scupper it by posting scans of the DVSA paperwork.

I agree Harry. He’s an experienced driver who seeks attention on here by pretending to be a student. Look at his posts. For someone who has been in the game for five minutes, he doesn’t half have the truck driver lingo down to a tee.

So you think I’ve been driving longer than I’ve said… Okay that one is easy:

Unless I have borrowed someone’s licence which matches the dates I’ve said perfectly I think that should sort out any concerns you have.

In terms of me being a student… Well I don’t really want to post that information on here. But if you ever come to Brum then I’m more than happy to show you around my lab and buy you a pint.

Have a nice weekend.

It’s not a job but a lifestyle :sunglasses: Least that’s what the big riggers say but i always thought of it as just a job i did.

Maybe fairer to say “it is what you make it”?
If someone chooses to do Euro work, or domestic long-distance, and stay out for months, then that is what it is.
If someone chooses to work within a 50km radius of home, home every night, then that is what it is.
Sometimes, at different life stages, the same person can choose both those two options. One licence for a wide variety of different jobs!

Best of luck Sammy! Can’t wait to hear how it goes ;D

I’d like to thank you, really, for all of your posts in this section. I’m currently a uni student, and have been pondering on and off getting my HGV licence so I can ■■■■ about on agency in the weekends. Your posts this year, I think, have convinced me to take the plunge and get it done this summer

I took a gap year last year and spent it driving buses. It was great fun and I loved the work, both the driving and the dealing with people, but there’s not much in the way of casual/agency work on PCVs :frowning:
Still, it’s all useful experience, and means I should hopefully find the class 2 HGV test quite easy (had an assessment drive and didn’t struggle). Must admit though, when I was on the buses, I did do a basically sammym amount of damage

Also, off topic, but I’m really disappointed that when you get the cat A bike licence they don’t fill in A1 and A2 for you :frowning: I passed cat B in 2015 and don’t even have B1 shown

I was thinking it’d be really nice to get HGV entitlement for the purpose of filling in all the boxes on the back of my licence :stuck_out_tongue:

Basket get it done. The licence will pay for itself back in less than 10 shifts. So it’s a no brainer really. And a HGV licence is a good insurance policy. A side point is that is ages like a good wine… the longer you have it the easier it is to walk into jobs.

If you can drive a bus I’d imagine that a class 2 wagon won’t be that different - guarantee you will get the itch and end up driving bendies sooner rather than later. I reckon by the time my class 1 licence is 6 months old I’ll be telling agencies not to offer me class 2 work.

I agree about the bike licence - they gave me C1 which is pointless as I have C so why not give me A1/A2 as well. I wouldn’t have admitted it otherwise but I was a bit put out. But I am safe in the knowledge I’ll never have to do another driving test now.

(One side thing… which you are not meant to say on here. But I really enjoy driving 99% of the time. I think it’s a fun job. There are times I want to pull my hair out - but I enjoy going to new places and seeing new things. I’d be no good at having a ‘regular run’ but respect those that do. Even if I went back into a normal well-paid job I think I’d be tempted to do the occasional sat/sun/night shift.)

Oh, no, you’re allowed to say it. We’re just pointing out that if you’re still doing the job in 30 years time, you won’t be saying it then. :stuck_out_tongue:

  not sure quite how to say this, but after 42 years (and some before that on vans and little lorries) i still enjoy the job…but i am on a fairly specialised own account job, it would be a different story if i had to go into piggin RDC’s, i’d last till about 6pm Monday night and jack the bugger in.
