Saw this a few weeks ago in corley services nth bnd. One of Wm Walkers of Aberdeen still flying the flag for ropers and sheeters…
I must admit very neatly roped and sheeted, but he’s committed the cardinal sin, should have sheeted over the headboard and down over the back of the trailer tut, tut, his next load may have been on the floor and most firms won’t load on a wet or damp deck.
Going at bit OTT here Ossie IMO. Looks like the Walkers load was heavy and on pallets and look at the height of that headboard to sheet over! We hauled a lot of paper and never had to issue directives to sheet the m/t flats prior to re-loading and in any case the loading bays were that warm a wet platform was dry in no time! It didn’t matter if it was wet or dry our shunters put down a few layers of paper on the flat and we never had any wet claims! No,the Walker driver looks like he knows his stuff as regards sheeting and roping, typical Aberdonian, tight pockets and even tighter ropes!!! My opinion only Ossie so don’t “take a powder” Cheers Bewick.

I know what ya mean OssieD , i reckon he was being lazy, or in a rush getting it all out of 1 sheet !

Not you as well “Gunner”!!! What was his load anyway?Maybe it was shrunk wrapped or not sensitive to damp and just needed covering to be tidy! Anyway you were there, you should have got the gen off the driver and then given us chapter and verse instead of “half a tale” !!! Then again if you’d started “nosing” you may have got the “Aberdonian” kiss! so maybe it wouldn’t have been such a good idea afterall! Cheers Bewick.

I know what you mean Bewick, even I’m not that picky, but we used to load welding rod for all over the country, you weren’t aloud one spot of wet or damp on the deck or they wouldn’t load you and as we were tramping all over not knowing what the next load would be we had to sheet everything even slabs, and concrete beams the boss would go daft if you came into the yard unsheeted even when EMPTY, but all said and done the lad’s done a nice tidy job with what he had, well done.

We do a job up to a mill in Scotland with Cardboard tubes that have to be on a flat as they are craned off, you should hear some of them cry when i ask them to pick a flat trailer up and put the ropes and sheets on to go and load them, its like the end of the world. Soft gits, like my old man says most of them are not proper drivers just chauffeurs.
Hiya Ramone they told me at Bo-alloy that my idea at the time of just using a big bold single word on the curtain was a first as far as they were concerned and they were suitably impressed.Other firms started to use the same format afterwards!! I reckoned nowt to plastering the curtain full of ■■■■■■■■ with “We go everywhere every day and 10 tel. nos. and telex nos.” At least when one of our Tautliners was spotted, even a mile away, you could see who’s it was and if ,by chance ,you wanted to contact us you didn’t have to memorise all the crap which by that time you’d have forgotten the name anyway!!! Yes we got a lot of favourable coments from customers and suppliers alike.Only concession was a batch of new T/liners comemorating our 25 years of operation.Cheers Dennis.
Dennis I always preferred the writing as small as possible and the more the wagon was not noticeable the better as you never knew who was on the prowl. This is only the views of a retired driver who’s wagon was not always where the log book said it was or the tacho’s for that matter.
cheers Johnnie
